The Best rider card should be given to the best rider under 25 in a class. Surely no one can argue with that. I can understand in a first ridden class if the judge feels the rider was good considering their age but not in a RIHS open M&M ridden. I watched a well supported RIHS M&M small breeds qualifier recently. There were a number of very talented young riders in the class. I was surprised that the best rider card went to a rider who was consistently on the wrong diagonal and oblivious to the fact that her pony swapped legs in it's gallop along the back of the line. She had to be told by her producer to trot before the judge noticed. She may well have the cute factor but she is alot older than she looks at 13, infact there were a number of much younger jockeys who performed very good shows....OK anger vented now!

i think some judges don't really worry about the idea and just give the card to the first placegetter, regardless of whether they can ride or not!! however, there are some excellent judges who go down the line to give the card to the best jockey, regardless of the pony's placing. those who spring to mind inc mrs Whiteley and mrs Cole - both really reward correct riding

i dont think many judges pay attention to the best rider, as said above usually 1st gets it. and if not 4th or 5th. to be honest i wouldnt really bother aslong as the youve been judged fairly

Well it is a shame if it is for the best rider regardless of placing that this hasn't been correctly communicated to judges, stewards, show organisers/secretaries etc.
Judges may simply assume they must give it to the highest placed under 25.

surely judges should know what they are for, after all its qualifying for a class at the champs and they have to carry a rule book with them! My little girl loves getting best rider cards and tries her hardest to win them!

We have won quite a few 'Best Rider' cards over the past year - none of which were for being placed 1st (cos we were never higher than 2nd!!!!) but I do think soime judges can be a bit blase about giving them out & don't necessarily hand them to the best rider.

I stewarded last year somewhere at a very top show and the geriatric judge awarded it on the principle that it was a boy and needed encouraging !! All of us stewarding linched the judge.
