we have a dog who is now 7 who has been allergic to pollen all her life, however it is now getting worse the older she is getting. I have been advised to give her periton from the vets, however her eyes suffer, and now gets continual eye infections and she keeps scratching. She is fine October to March but as soon as the tree pollen starts her scratching starts. Has anyone got any advice? thank you

Is there not an injection she could have? I don't know if it's the same for dogs, but my brother suffers with hay fever really badly, but has an injection once a year that keeps it at bay - it works really well for him. Might be worth asking if there is anything similar for dogs.

They can have an injection made up to cover them for the different pollens they are allergic to as some are allergic grass pollen and some tree pollen and some all of them. Your vet would have to refer you to a specialist(if he isn't one himself) and they do sensitivity tests. It is very expensive to have all the tests done though, maybe your insurance would cover it if you have her insured.

My GSD has exactly the same. Her eyes run from spring to Autumn. My vet said it was fine to use puriton, but it didnt work for her at all.
I just bath them off each day and apply sudacrem round them. She looks like a panda, but it keeps the infections totally away.

my last vet said we could only give her half a periton tablet a day and it had no effect, however we have just changed vets and he suggested giving her up to 3 a day and it appears to be working, she still has a number of sores under her tummy but they look like are getting better and her eyes for the first time for weeks are looking better as well. So thank you.

Hi Honey from your local area given daily can work wonders. It has to be from your immediate vicinity though as the bees have to be exposed to same pollens as the dog. Also works great with horses and people :-)

Our GSD was diagnosed with allergies at 1 year old (grass and pollen included). He had blood test taken at the vets which were then sent to a lab somewhere near Blackpool. Came back he was allergic to grass, carrots, peanuts and beet pulp). The vet arranged for a German company to make him his own vaccine which he had to have every week. Im sure it cost around £160 for a 6 month supply. We also gave him piriton. It didnt affect his eyes though only his skin, he lost a lot of his fur. The vaccine and piriton didnt work Im afraid. Saying that though he is still with us 6 years on (if a bit bald).

Benadryl worked with my JR, her eyes were really sore and puffy and she used to make strange snuffly noises but after a couple of days of benadryl she has been fine. Only needed half a tablet at a time as she doesn't weigh very much.
