Am full of questions tonight!
Need to take mare with 5 week foal at foot up to vets on Thursday as mare needs an x ray.
What is best way to travel them in a trailer?
Am thinking partition out, mare tied up and foal loose. Is that correct?
Would you cross tie mare?

Yes thats what I'd do and did it that way at one of the studs I worked at. Has your trailer got doors at the rear above the ramp? If it does travel with them closed too.

Yes that is how I would travel them also, with all top doors shut!!!! I dont cross tie mares, they travel well with foals and are usually careful so not to stand on them.

I don't cross-tie either, but I do usually tie a couple of bales of hay/straw right at the front to keep their weight off the front and have lots of straw on the floor. My mares usually end up travelling backwards.
I also tape padding over any bits that stick out (ie bits where the partitions usually slot in)

I'm with the majority. I tie my mare up (cross tie) and leave the foal loose, without the partition in. Did it numerous times going to and from stud last year and worked very well :-) Good luck x

Thanks all. Well managed today and tied mare and got to vets and back safe and sound. Bothe travelled well and Charlie now has a fan club at the vets and he had them all wrapped round his hoof!
Sadly it wasn't good news for mare though!
