sorry! we are home produced!! n o one rides Phanty but kate, and i kept him fit by leading him off another horse the first year as she was doing a levels!! last year was easier as she has a gap year, but she was away working in an orphanage in south Africa for all of November, so i led him again! we do not have 'an army of grooms' we try very hard to be good at what we do, and sometimes i think people get 'amateur home produced' and 'hopeless ', muddled up!! just because we strive to do well, study the professionals, work extremely hard, and get the results, we seem to be knocked all the time . anyone can be good at what they do IF they try hard enough. interestingly enough, no one ever tells Rob Walker, Katie jerram, Julie templeton etc to stop showing an animal once it has won a couple of championships, we joined the Veteran showing society, not the 'Veteran not very good at anything society', and we do just that- show our pony. if people have a problem i would suggest they are also the type of people who would ban sports day at school in case a child comes last! a couple of weeks ago phanty was beaten in a veteran class, in our opinion, he shouldn't have been, but that was what we paid for - someones opinion! We didn't get straight on the internet and whinge and whine about the terrible judging, we patted him, told him we loved him and brought him home! that is the nature of showing, sometimes you are lucky , sometimes unlucky, if you can't take it - don't do it, but for goodness sake stop grizzling. ps dodson and horrell sponsor the veterans, not Claire Blaskey, and she is not a producer, she has her own horses, and Georgina Andrews is also a GOOD amateur from home. rant over, and thank you allthe nice people who have supported kate and phanty on here!

I was in the class on Wednesday,I got a very bad initial pull in.it was just not our day,but as you say, that's showing.I do however believe if you didn't see the outright favouritism going on,then you are more deluded than I thought. Can you hand on heart say that the top 6 were there on merit and performance alone.the class is aimed at amatures, whether they be good ones of bad ones, the bottom line is there were horses in there that perhaps stretch the home produced umbrella a little.noone is saying you are not home produced or indeed not an amature but one if the top 6 certainly wasn't.it deprived someone of a place and the judge, obviously knowing her should have followed the rules..I actually thought I'm blue chip too should have one,his show was faultless and he is beautiful and elegant and would probably still hold his own in a riding horse class.Top show people tend to retire thier animals before they lose their zest, several in the class that day,in my opinion have already.

So I assume that you have a written a formal letter of complaint to the VHS stating the facts that people were riding in the class who weren't eligible? Or not? I wasn't at Windsor, so can't comment on what went on. Also, in response to the person (cob lady?) who stated that VHS judging was bent and facey (or words to that effect), please, bring your veteran to a VHS class that I am judging, and I can guarantee you that you will be judged purely on merit!! I judged a Regional Final last year, and again, I can guarantee that the winner who got the Olympia ticket was there PURELY based on it's performance on the day, and not on who was riding it / who it's connections were. I couldn't care less who owns / is riding the animal; if it doesn't perform the best, it won't win. Simples! .I am very proud of my reputation as a fair judge, and I take exception to people inferring that all VHS judging is bent. Put your money where your mouth is, and make a proper formal complaint in writing if you think something amiss has taken place. Whining on the internet is not the way to do it.

in answer to bedazzlesme's post, yes i think the top of the line in the very large class was about right. i think the problem is that although the society states that conformation is not judged, but soundness and suppleness etc, and a happy way of going is, unfortunately there is a blurred line, and the 'show' horse or pony is favoured , as in any show class. - on the other hand, if this were not the case, there is a danger of the 'sympathy vote' for the cuddliest and oldest animal. i think the veterans have realised , with the great rise in membership, and the interest in the show side of the society, that they have to recognize that their original idea of the 'best' veteran has changed, and if you look at the line up at the final , the majority of animals are of a very high quality, and are 'show' horses and ponies, and , whether people like it or not, it is indeed a 'showing' society. We have lovely old friends at home, who i would not enter in a veteran class, as, having now been involved for two seasons, i know that they would not be looked at, so they go and do other things they are good at, and still find enjoyable at a local level.
i think people have to face up to the fact, that someone else touched on in an earlier post, that it is an open competition, restricted to amateurs, who, broadly speaking, are not paid ,in any way to show or teach to show. it does not preclude 'good' people from competing.

i think you can see how much Phanty loves his showing just by looking at photos (ive never sene him in the flesh) but his ears are always pricked throughout his show and if hes still managing to win and beat younger ponies in RIHS SP classes at Windsor, i really think that is telling you something!! good luck this yr, you deserve it all xxxx

How sad this post got so personal. Phanty is a star and a credit to the class his success has only promoted the VHS and this wonderful competition and long may he continue to! So sad that the world is full of jealous people. Leave the pony alone. He won fairly, would you be questioning the rules if "Dobbin" had won.........NOPE, you'd all be saying it was wrong for the vhs to be represented by "Dobbin"!! THe Vhs also have rossettes for local events so if you have a vet and don't want to do area's/regionals, leave them to the people that do, but please leave the nasty comments at home. Overthehill, good for you, enjoy your Veteran for as long as you can, we have the same problem, ours is not happy being left at home, she's only 19 but looks fab and hates being "field nanny" and I don't blame her! She will continue to go to shows for as long as she wants and will retire when SHE SAYS not me! Just like to clear up, I by no mean's think any of the past representatives in this class have been "Dobbin's" and I'm sorry if it sounded like that. There have been some beautiful pre- phanty winners and it's fantastic that they have been provided with a show case. It's great to see that the class is getting the coverage and the promotion now. Also well done for Windsor Phanty and family xxx

Armies of grooms? Not sure what show circuit some people are on. We are a home produced family with amatuer status who manage to maintain the highest standards with all our horses/ponies from yearlings to veterans without outside help. Maybe some of us just try harder not to be average. Try watching the pro's and raising your game to their level, because all the pro-bashing in the world aint going to drag them down to yours.

I know for a fact that the VHS game has been raised as I had it said on many occasions last year when my boy went to the qualifiers, regionals and also (god forbid) did some open hack classes too and held his own up against Minkara's lovely hack and another champion too. VHS members were whinging that the proper county 'showies' had come and taken over. Well I recommend that if you dont win, take a long hard look at yourself and find out why. If a pony is trawled up and down the country, then it is upto the owner to know whether or not its had enough. The responsibility lies with the owner and not the VHS. Limiting classes is not the answer and will only cause a shortfall in membership. (some of you may now want to shoot me!!) My boy is 18 and the only reason he is not competing the open hacks, ladies side saddle, 'little height' eventing and long distance rides this year is because I am helping my child to bring out the ponies. I work full time and time and money cannot do both. Yes, I shall be eventing him and hunting him. He is like a 5 year old hunting and i would most certainly not put a novice on him. Hes won at a high level, been placed at hoys, RI and all the major shows. He loves it!!!!! I shall continue to show him in veterans and (try) and give phanty a run for his money (lol) (minkara, I can see you raising an eyebrow!! lol) I will show him until he says no more. Thats my responsibilty as his loving owner. Should they only be able to win the title once?? Absolutely not, poppycock!! Go get em. Raise the game and lets see some more of you out there competing and letting your oldies enjoy themselves. After all, every grandad enjoys a party!!

I am just wondering how they manage to judge the veterans with so many different types in the ring - especially when you might get say a fantastic example of a shetland against a show pony or hack.
What sort of qualifications and experience do the veteran judges have? Are they meant to have a good knowledge of all breeds and types or will they get taken in by the more flashy ones or at the other end more cuddly sorts? It must be a very hard class to judge as most panel judges will specialise in one sort of horse or pony.

Hope they dope test at Olympia and the bigger shows this year. Bute seems to be the in thing now in these classes and that's so unfair on the genuinely sound ponies.

Yes, totally agree meadow pipit, although im sure it will never happen as it costs such a lot to have dope tests carried out and would not think that VHS would pay for this as hosting the final at Olympia is a tremendous burden on the VHS already.
If dope testing were carried out there, there could be no whispering campaigns against the winners afterwards - just the judges decision - love it or hate it.
The NPS dressage final had dope testing brought in and it was quite interesting that some (hyperthetically) strong contenders did not come forward.
And before you all jump on me - this post is NOT aimed at anyone in particular (or insinuating that Phanty should not have won) or at the winners of the regional finals - just my own opinion that if dope testing were brought in, then the winner of the VHS final would be completely beyond doubt.

anyone is at liberty to dope test my pony for absolutely anything!! at any time!!! In Australia he was tested at random at a couple of state and Royal shows, and , of course, it was negative. I am all for testing, as people who know me and have had the conversation with will testify!! To now insinuate we dope him with anything is a new form of bullying as you have probably all exhausted the 'we think he shouldn't compete any more ' thread!! get a life and start lOOking inwards to your own actions instead of attacking other people all the time!

Blimey, why do you get so defensive Minkara, the post said it wasn't aimed at anyone. You are the one who really needs to get a life, for someone who says they work so hard to produce their ponies to the standard of the professionals, you sure spend a lot of time on here defending yourself. Don't rise to the bait. As for random testing when your pony was in Australia, wasn't he there a good few years ago, way before a horse should start to need bute to remain sound?

As I have said, my post is a general one and not aimed at you Minkara. Nor am i suggesting in any way that you dope your pony.
I do not consider that my post is a form of bullying!

I think it is well known that the VHS condone the use of bute to compete and it is therefore unlikely that they will dope test anything at Olympia.

Are you people still going on about this wonderful pony and its owners? Is this the green eyed monster coming out again? For crying out loud, leave them alone, i hope and pray my pony is as fit and well as he is at that age! Other things to do like work and horses now, maybe some of you will find a life in the meantime and stop picking on people!

Minkara- Well done for your Windsor win, in the judges opinion, on the day, your pony was the best and that is all we are asking for in showing. It is a shame people mainly hiding behind 'guest' status have to be so rude towards you and your pony.
Best of luck for the rest of the season.

I for one am bored of everything turning to that bloody pony.it's almost like they are logging on as several users to keep everyone talking about it...jes.it's just a pony.I for one am not that keen on it,I like a prettier head and not a fan of flea bitten greys.talk about something else.yes it has nice movement in front, but a show pony it is not.

Redlorry that is rather rude. Veteran classes are for any breed or type and some just happen to be show ponies, passing comment on this pony with regard to his suitability for a show pony class is irrelevant to this thread. Showing is subjective and a personal opinion, as it happens the opinion of the open show pony judges at Windsor was to send him to RIHS.

Its more a show pony than some of the show hunters trying to pass off as one! Though your point is irrelevant. Get off their case. Is no wonder showing has a bad name.

Just for the record, it wasnt the Windsor judges opinion the Phantom was the best show pony in the ring, he came 5th after going up from a pretty poor pull in, he was fortunate that the others had qualified and the ticket went down the line. I'll be very surprised if the judge was aware that the top four had previously qualified, so on this occasion he just got lucky he wasnt the best out there and did excactly put in a blinding performance so there you go he is only equine after all which means he is beatable if you work hard enough. ENOUGH SAID

Im amazed at the bullying that is going on in this thread, even though Minkara is very local to me, i do not know the family, but have seen Phanty in the ring. Wow, what presence, and fabulous production. And thorny croan and red lorry, you are the peeps who really should get a life. minkara clearly does what she does well, and also has time to come online, Shock horro!!!

I think it is well known that the VHS condone the use of bute to compete and it is therefore unlikely that they will dope test anything at Olympia. Outrageous! The people who run the Olympia would stamp that out fast. It's is run under FEI rules which means all animals and humans can be tested. No wonder showing has such an appalling reputation. It's about time every society particpated in the FEI 's pre-oly,pic clean ujp campaign. Doubt if the grey pony's the problem as he has qualified for RIHS and NPS now which will make him available for testing at both shows.

Dear redlorry, at least be brave if you are going to be nasty and post under your own name!! I can assure you that i ONLY post under minkara, and have never used a guest name or any other name on horsegossip. I am sick to death of people having a pop at our pony, we cannot be responsible for judges opinions, either good or bad, but most seem to find him quite attractive!! I thought i had stated our case at length, but for those of you who don't get it ----- 1. we don't dope him 2. we will continue to show him as long as he is healthy and enjoys it 3.if we choose to show him as a show pony it is the judges opinion that counts, not cyber snoopers, as to whether he is worthy of a ribbon. 4.We are homeproduced amateurs, and anyone is welcome to come here and see if we have hidden horse income and a yard full of high paying liveries, i don't think you will find any!! 5.I can't think of anything else to say, except please now close the subject, if you have any gripes why not address them to the relevant societies, re doping , entries, etc instead of targeting one pony and rider, i am sure you would not like your family , or animals, constantly abused, either openly, or by inference, on a regular basis.

Minkara - You should be proud of yourselves for what your family has achieved. For one I think he is a stunning pony and what a showman he is. I have a little 13hd SHP who is 19yrs and he runs up the lorry everytime to. Just because they are older doesnt mean that they have to stop, my old boy would hate it not showing. The louder the music the better and all the lights just make him buzz! I am sure this is true of your boy to - " He will tell you when he has had enough". Good Luck for the coming season And I am sure the whole family will enjoy it again and so will he. P.S - He looked absolutly Stunning at PUK in the Super league , What a performance he was amazing and the smile on the face and the pricked ears just said it all. All these people who slag and slander on the internet under "guest posted" need to grow a pair!

I am now going to lock this thread as I think it has ran it course and people are getting upset.
It also doesn't make nice reading either and is not really in the spirit of the guests posting area.
