my saddle is lifting at the back when the pony moves - would this be because it is not wide enought or because I need to go wider. It does seem fine of him but with this happening then it can't be the right size.

You need to find a trustworthy saddler to come and have a look. Preferably one that isnt trying to sell a saddle..........!

No one can say whether the saddle is too wide or narrow, basically the saddle doesn't fit at all, needs to be adjusted or maybe the pony has difficult conformation which needs to be taken into account. I presume your saddle was fitted by a qualified person in the first place.
Is this a new saddle recently fitted? if so you need to call back the fitting saddler in the first instance. If an old saddle and the pony has changed shape, then call a master saddler to have a look. Hopefully the saddle can be adjusted and a new one is not needed.

Usually when the saddle lifts at the back it's because it is too wide and sitting too low at the front therefore causing the saddle to flap at the back. You probably want one that is a little narrower, or if you know someone who flocks saddles, you could possibly have that done with the saddle you have, and once it is lifted at the front it will sit level and stop the 'saddle slap'.

Hi chloe
I just purchased a second hand saddle for my horse and needed to get my saddle fitter out to check it as it was also lifting at the back when the horse was ridden. My saddler said the saddle was slightly too wide (would rather wide than too narrow!!) and put more flocking in the front of the saddle for me. It nows fits perfectly! Good luck, get a good sadddler out and they can probably sort out the problem for you.

Thanks Tracey - he is changing shape all the time - I asked my instructress and like you she said too wide so I stiched a white leg wrap into the front of the numnah and this has helped greatly. I am going to persevere for now as I coul dbe having a saddle fitter out every month right now with his ever changing shape!
