As mentioned in my other thread, our foal has arrived, and is adorable! Unfortunately she has to have a plasma infusion tomorrow, and was just wondering what this involves? she seems too small to go through anything too serious, even though I know she has to have it done for her own safety!

One I bred last year had to have one - she spent less than 24hrs in vet hospital (mare had ingrowing teats foal could not suck to start with so got no colostrum, and mare got mastitis, could have had them done them at home but a lot of work so opted to let vet nurses pamper them). The infusions have to be put in very slowly through a needle into a blood vessel, and she did have more than one, can't remember how many, sorry. The nurses had her lying on their knees (Welsh Sec A) being cuddled, and both of them were absolutely fine when I took them home. Really not that bad for them to go through, and life-saving if she needs it!

Had the infusion today all went well, looking a bit sory for herself, as had a small amount of sedation. Had a canular into her jugular vein, and then a large bag of plasma went in. She was very good, and as sarahp said its life saving. The vet said today that had we not found her so quickly on tuesday night, she would have died, as she was getting cold, and could not suckle, but now she is fine and charging round the stable, so we are very luck, and alls well that end well!!

My foal had one last week......see thread '.Foal born at 315 days'.
Poor mite, so not only 4 weeks early but mare had been running milk for a good fortnight and although I'd milked some colostrum off and put it in the freezer, it obvioyusly wasn't enough for her. She had it done at home, mare sedated as she is a maiden and quite foal proud. As sarahp says, a line is put in a vein in the neck and the plasma took about 1/2hr to go in. Thankfully she only needed the one and 24hrs later she was a completely different character, bouncing about all over the place!
Good luck with yours.

It made an instant difference to my foal when she had it done (now a healthy 4 year old mare). Only problem was the clipped neck spoiled the baby pics, lol!
