my 6yrold shet mare has bagged up, no idea when foal is due - now to 30th of may basically. she is in a field with her 2yrold daughter, the daughter spent a year living with another filly, then came back to her mum in december 09, originally just had a sniff around nymph's (the mare) udders, then disregarded them. now they are bigger, she keeps trying to have a drink. she'll groom her mum, then stretch down for milk. i am really worried she is going to get to the cholostrum before the foal, but i don't know whether to move her out of the field and leave nymph alone and friendless, and then nymph wait to have the foal until bl**dy june! has anyone else had the same problem and what shall i do?

If it was me i think i would try and stop it, if that means separating them then i would. Can you put an electric tape fence up so they can see each other but not touch (other than noses).

I think I'd separate them - the last thing you want is a foal that has had no colostrum. Be warned, it will cost the same to infuse a Shettie foal with plasma if necessary as it would a big horse as you have to pay for the whole bag - or do at my vets anyway.

id seperate her as you dont really want her trying to push the foal off either ,one of my colts did that and was adament he werent going away from his mum the foal was ,i had to samck him in the end as he wouldnt get out of the stable ,,he rushed in while trying to get mum and baby in as she kicked the door open before the foal was born
