ELLIE HAS FOALED - Big black colt, both doing really well, thank goodness!!! xxxx ;D ;D ;D Hello!! I was wondering if anybody would advise what they would do if you were in my shoes at the moment..... My mare is due on the 23rd May but has been bagged up for just over 5 weeks and showed a bit of clear wax 2 days ago. I am due to go away on Wednesday for 6 days so booked her in to go and stay at the stud who own the stallion I used (very good friend) I've been on foal watch for the last 2 nights and there is no change whatsoever. She is a maiden so I have no history to go by and I sadly lost my first foal this year (I sent the mare to a different stud and foal very sadly did not make it out of the sack ) so I'm extra worried about this one now!! My dilemma is do I send her off to stud now or do I wait another few days and wait and see if foal arrives??? Any advice is gratefully received x

I'm so sorry you lost your first foal - that's my main worry me being caught out and it not coming out of the sack If I were you (me putting myself in your shoes) I'd put off going away and I'd stay with the mare until she had the foal. If she moves to the stud now, my worry would be it'd upset her and therefore she hang onto it a little longer? Maybe someone more experienced with this can give you a better idea Good luck and hope it goes well

Thanks sparkle, was a very emotional time indeed. Wouldn't want to wish it upon anybody. My main concern is upsetting the mare. Sadly, I can't get out of having to go away so I think I'm going to have to speak to a very nice, experienced friend of mine to see if she is free for those few days. I just hate having to put that responsibility on to somebody else......x

Vets reckon that foals found dead in the bag were usually stillborn anyway rather than smothered, if that is any consolation. ie nothing could have been done to save it.

Thanks sarahp. I've spent many hours wondering what could have gone wrong. The day before she foaled, I went up to see her and gave her a really grooming session complete with gentle massage and I felt the foal moving so not sure if that was the case. Somebody told me that it could have been that the mare was quite old, the sack would have been a bit thicker than normal??? xx

I would also think if the bag wasnt broken the foal had been born stillborn. It doesnt usually take much to break it. I however would move the mare to the stud if I was due to go away so someone experienced could look after her.

I made the decision on Thursday to move the mare as my other mare came in to season and was due to be covered by one of the studs stallions...... Thank goodness I did!!! Our little foal arrived at 10.50pm last night.....the mare obviously wanted the luxury of a big, bedded up stable and being pampered, and she has given us a big, strong black colt. both are doing really well. The other mare has been covered also so now I can go away on Wednesday and relax!!! xxx Thnaks for all your comments x
