actually they are said to be the most 'untampered' with of the native breeds. ALL the other breeds without exception have been influenced by other breeds in their history...welsh D's and hackneys, Dales and Fells etc etc it goes on. The exmoor because of its position in the country amongst other things apparently is said to be the least contaminated and hence could be said to be the truest native. Exmoors are a great breed and shouldn't be knocked. They are a very versitile and there are some very nice exmoors out there on the showing scene you just have to open your eyes. Thank you! I couldn't have said it better myself!

what a load of b****x 'apparently' and eve. i've had welshies all my life with extensive pedigrees, none of which included any cross breeding. i think it is you who are bringing this board a bad name by making unfounded, sweeping comments which are detrimental to our native breed. I dont know about anyone else here, but i'm interested in promoting and preserving all native breeds and whilst yes, my least favourite of which would also happen to be the exmoor, i would not use the apparent flaws i see in them as a way of promoting my favourite-welsh cobs.
by the way Eve, what is it that you ride?

Actually Judgement itis you who is talking b****x and you have just proved that you know nothing about the welsh breeds. Indeed they have had an infusion of Arab, Hackney, TB and a few others, I know I bred Welsh mountain ponies So if you are going on the attack get your facts right.
Have you heard of the internet of do you just use it for gossip boards I suggest you go "a surfing" and you might find some interesting facts.
Eve ignore them I wouldnt want an Exmoor at all, but everyone has their own idea and i have definately seen some nice Exmoors. Did one not win Olympia the year before last.

What makes an Exmoor more of a true breed than other natives?? Sorry, but I think your talking rubbish - I have yet to see an Exmoor that is not front heavy and on the forehand. that's nothing to do with breed type, that's just schooling. Exmoors are built like the prehistoric horses - they weren't built for riding and havent been infused with 'riding' types like almost every other breed. Hence of course they are not going to be as naturally inclined to be as easily or comfortably schooled. Me thinks you need a reality check on what an m&m actually is out of the context of showing.

Lol...this has made me laugh. I'm not talking about the breeding you see in the passports....much much further back than that. You clearly can't be that devoted to native breeds and the preservation of them all if you don't know basic facts like that!! Go do some googling and have a look...I'm only young and I know about the cross-breeding of most of our breeds and why exmoors are the least tampered with. Exmoors are getting a bad rap on here but lets face it, no one takes this site seriously.....well i hope they don't!. If you want to talk natives and M&M's go and have a look around the internet...there are tonnes of boards where you can learn a lot about the preservation and history of our natives without it getting nasty.

Didn't mean to start a big fuss - just a bit of fun!!!! Still it's nice to know some people agree with me about the 'ugly' Exmoor.

How nice it is to see such support for exmoors, even if they are not a breed of your choice, for those of you that have a blinkered vision on your own ponies and can't take a breed at face value, then I pity you!
I have an Exmoor stallion who I produced under saddle in Novices classes many years ago, along with his sister who went on to win numerous open riddens and worker classes, both these ponies where schooled to Medium dressage level and often compteted against and beat many "competition horses" their manners are impecable and are praised for their lightness in the hand (from coorrect schooling, which takes time and patience! They have given me much pleasure, which at the end of the day what ever breed you ride, the be all and end all of it is "fun" which obviously some of you do not know how to do!
What does it matter what breed I currently ride? (What breed do you think I ride and no it's not an exmoor!) If you really want to know pm me!

Having read this, no wonder we are ending up with some very untypey ponies considering the lack of knowledge of those involved in native showing. Read up on your native breeds, believe it or not, they DO actually have a purpose other than pootling around a show ring!

Eve, you like to come across as high and mighty but, everyone is entitled to like and dislike any breed they want for whatever purpose they want and it has absolutely nothing to do with you. Everybody is different - so what's your problem? Lets face it this site is called 'Horse GOSSIP' we're not here to save peoples feelings, perhaps you should learn to respect other peoples point of view too!!!! Either get with the spirit of the site or get lost.
