I'm sorry lolly but as you were unloading I would be following you into the stables with the clippers and a main comb, the family take the P out of me when the foals are born, they say I stand at the stable door with the iodine in one hand and the clippers in the other to take their heads out, mother in law reckons if the were born dry they'd have their heads out before they hit the ground.

I remember the rag and bone man, he frightened the life out of me but I had to go look as he had a coloured pony pulling the cart, ( I was only 2) I remember when the dustbin men came and the paper sack men and the pig bin men, and they think recycling is a new idea ;D I remember in the summer holidays going off all day either with friends walking in the woods or riding, and never worrying about getting attacked etc, I remember school Christmas Carol Services, when we were allowed to have them called that, and the school Christmas party afterwards, little bottles of orange and chocolate covered digestives, some wrapped in blue foil and some in red foil. Sports days when we allowed to be competitive. When kids had a healthy respect for teachers and Policemen. Going for riding lessons and imagining actually owning a horse, was a dream as my parents could never of afforded to buy me a horse or pony ( now own 10, probably over compensating for not having one as a very young child). Christmas days having an annual to read while Mum was cooking the dinner and having a selection box, and the highlight of the Christmas telly was Disney time, and Carol singers actually coming around the houses ahh those were the days and not actually knowing what or if anything we would be getting from Father Christmas, and firmly believing in him ;D Winters when we had to hack the compacted ice out of their hooves, and only the posh people had rugs (jute) for their ponies/horses. Hacking over to the Farriers, thinking nothing of it taking an hour or more and having to hack all the way back. Only wearing hard hats when we were at shows and having lessons we didn't see the dangers back then Being taken to shows by huge lorry, not ours, and the way they packed them in then, oh my!! we wouldn't now, glad that has stopped. When you went and bought feed and mixed your own, when horseshoes stayed on longer. When there was more country than roads I am so glad I found this thread as I thought it was just me that looked back on my childhood with rose tinted glasses, and was becoming my Mum and Nan when they used to say it was better in their younger days ;D

Our riding school had a field down the road and if you worked all day, you got to ride the pony bareback down to the field to turn them out, then you had to walk all the way back with the bridle! Oh and you would probably have to ride one while leading another!

Blimey i have got all emotional reading this thread ;D talking of the rag and bone man i can remember being a little girl and being fascinated at the horse and cart, soooo when the man went down the path to collect some rags or was it bones ;D ;D i sneaked up to the cart and picked up the reins to imagine what it would be like!!! Arrrggghh the horse broke into a trot and i was terrified!!!! out ran the man with his bundles of clothes flying about everywhere and grabbed the reins to stop the cart!!! he was very understanding and allowed me to sit on the horse ;D Just realised this thread tends to show ones age up!!! ;D
