Just wonderin if anyone else has a horse that allways has their tongue out while being ridden. I have tried a flash etc but he always sticks his tongue out. He does it while lunging too but not too bad but only does it with a bit it. Doesn't affect him at all its just stuck right out so looks daft!! Anyone else have this problem? Thanks

What bit is he in? Does it allow room for the tongue?

Some of the fleshier tongued breeds do this if they aren't comfortable with their bit; could that be the problem? - easy to rectify with a bit that has a link or port in the middle.

What happens when your lunge or ride (if safe to do so) off a headcollar, no bit? If horse sticks tongue out then, it is a very unfortunate habit and I know of no cure. If horse only does this with a bit, I personally would invest in one of those bit visits. Not sure if it is Myler or neule schule but one does them.
Bitting 'expert' comes out and examines horse's mouth and way of going and recommends a suitable bit. I am sure you would be able to try before you buy as well.

Mine did the same but was told to try the JP bits with a flat link not rounded so i've bought her one and rode in it for the 1st time this wkend and she never did it once. They are designed to make room for horses with small mouths but fat tongues which mine has. They are not dear neither..

Glad to see this raised as we had the dentist out toour Exmoor 3 days ago & he said to try a different pelham (we had got him in a straight bar with port but he was getting hold of the bit & wearing his teeth down!) so we tried a french link today - he was much better in it (not opening his mouth) but did start hanging his tongue out in trot & canter on the flat (no sign of it in walk or while jumping). Hopefully have a hartwell (bought off someone on here!) arriving next week so will give that a go!

lots of racehores do it. its usually a sign of them being relaxed! Tongues straps wont stop them doing it.

May sound a bit harsh to some people, but a crank noseband works. We have 2 and they are really good & they work x

Shoot me down in flames, but if they're putting their tongue over the bit, they're doing their best to tell you that they're not comfortable. You can strap them up to stop them doing it, but they'll still be uncomfortable in the mouth and the way of going will never be 100% right. You need to find the reason for the discomfort, and once you know what the problem is you can remove the source of the discomfort and then you will have a happy relaxed pony that doesn't need strapping up!

My little 122cm SP is doing this and I have put her into the thinnest bradoon type of snaffle to allow room for her fleshy tongue, she is still opening her mouth somtimes but not putting her tongue out so much and seems happier. She just seems to have a tiny mouth, and big fleshy tongue so anything else in there is almost too much for her to cope with.

Have you tried a Myler bit with a port.
My shetland mare sticks her tongue out due to the pressure from the bit. Have tried the Myler for nearly a week now and touch wood the problem is much better. She appears to ride in a much nicer outline too amd mouths more.
Can try them from places like the horse bit shop for very little money.
