would love to know whether you think this is a sm rh or large ha, previously i thought he was a hack but not too sure. SEE LOWER DOWN FOR NEW IMAGE also any constructive critque welcomed. also need advice - he has come straight off the race track and has loads of presence and flashy paces, however when he gets with others in the ring he blows up. He is fine in the warm up, fine in the lorry park fine when in the ring when walking but up the pace and he turns himself inside out - has anyone had any experience of this - any suggestions

my gut reaction is a hunter; try a bit of calmer till he gets the idea.

difficult when they have been raced to settle them in company perhaps some dressarge would help it would get him used to doing somthing without the company to wind him up whilst allowing you to get him used to company in the warm up area .
i would say he was hack type at the moment but might bulk up to riding horse once he relaxes .
avoid to much contact on the reins , use your seat to slow and settle him rather than your hands imagine dropping an anchor to the ground through your seat to slow him and than allow him to come up and round his back between between your legs .
remember if you pull on the reins hes been taught that means go faster
magnesium based calmer might help , defuse is good from supreeme products if he just needs a show day one youe give it in the morning and it should last most of the day , its tril and error with calmers you may need to try a few till you find what works best for him . if you could have a western riding lesson on a well trained western horse it will help you to ride him more with your body and seat , its a real eyeopener on a good western horse .
good luck

I would have thought RH. Drenrow is right about the reins on a racehorse,if you drop the contact he should slow down!!! I wouldnt have thought he's a hunter as he dosent have enough bone. Good luck with him whatever he turns out to be!!!

I am no expert but I would have said a riding horse. My boy who gets exceited in the ring gets his head and neck wiped with a Lavender grooming wipe (MOSS) before he goes in and it really calms him down. Presumeably the more shows he does the better he will be. A different bit might help - some calm down if the can play with a lozenge (in the middle of the bit). Good luck.

I must agree with drenrow about the race horse reins!!! The yard I worked on had a couple of point to pointers, 1 had come from Nicky Henderson and had had a succesful couple of seasons with him. The horse did alot of his fittening work at home and would go to his trainer ( Roy Trigg ) once he had started cantering. I did some of his early canter work and if I took a good strong contact on his reins he would really take hold of the bit and go like a rocket. He would never stop from having his reins pulled but as soon as I dropped the contact he slowed up like an angel!!!!!

We have found that a hackemore works well with ex-racers - breaks the you pull him, he pulls you circle. I appreciate you can't use it in the show ring, but perhaps whilst out hacking with friends (after he has got used to it in the manege!!) - if it works, try a Worcester noseband for a while with your chosen bit for the nose pressure

Yes but that's different from pulling there reins! If you have a nice contact they are relaxedan its when you start changing your contact and swapping your hands they will get keen as they will think your picking them up. You want to aim for a nice contact and keep it a even contact

Just wanted to upload side on picture still rh, not hack? Also i want to thank everyone regarding the suggestions around racehorse problems. i don't want people to think he is a nutter, because he isn't. He doesn't actually pull at all and gives a mannerly ride when he gets his head around what he is doing. Like is say he only ever misbehaves (leaps around) when trotting and cantering around with the others in the ring. I am hoping he will get the hang of it after another couple of outings.

How long has he been off the track? It can take a couple of years for them to settle and the real key is to get him working from behind, worry less about the outline and more about getting him off his forehand and lifting his shoulder. You will not have the pulling issue then. This more of a hack, he does not have the bone for a riding horse.

i still think hes a little to light for a riding horse but thats just my opinion hes quite fine in the leg . i take it hes full tb .
hope you find the key to his mind soon . we used to reschool ex racers , they can be a real challenge but worth it in the long run. at least he is sane outside the ring , there are plenty that arnt . belive me ive had one or 2 . 1 in particular went back into racing as it had a death wish off the track we tried alsorts with him but to no avail , lol at least he never got me off he did however ditch all the race yard staff so glad i never rode him out in a race saddle he had the fly buck and spin manuover down to a tea and was lighting quick .
i went out with a jockey a few years later and it seamed he'd ridden jump schooling on the said animal and announced it was the one of the scaryist but talented horse hed ever ridden
