-Personally i would go for the second season after foaling, ie not the foal heat ( which is between 5 to 8days after foaling) but the next season which is around 24 days to 28 days after foaling. I have covered one of my mares succesfully on the foal heat but only because she was always very clean after foaling and did not retain any foaling debris, also she tightened up very quickly. Most vets will advise to leave the foal heat alone as there is a lower chance of fertility especially if the mare has retained any of the birth fluids in her uterus.

I also agree with vjc as it gives chance for the uterus to get back into shape and recover.

I am not an expert, but my stud guy, who does all the AI etc, said the same as Holiday and vjc. He told me to bring her to him on her foal heat and he likes to wash them out then, He said he will then AI her on her following season.
Glad to hear you are all in agreement xx

I am sending my mare back to stud on the season after he rfoal heat and as she is going to the same stallion I do not need to get her reswabbed if she is back within 4 weeks.
You need to check with the stud

We require a fresh swab for every breeding year just to be on the safe side.
