I'm getting old and cynical I know, but why these days is any problem expected to be solved by either a change of bit/use of gadget/feed supplement. What happened to schooling and management and good riding?
My entires learn from the word go - as all my foals do - that they are expected to be obedient whatever. I can take any of them around the place here in a rope halter, even the 7yo D stallion, not just the little ones, in perfect safety. Yes, they may arch their necks and yell a bit, but a reminder from me to shut up and they know to just calm down and behave.

i have to agree with sarahp i sent my mare away while i was working away to be broken and she was done and riding out i was really impressed as they seemed to do rather quickly and thought i had value for money , a year on i started having problems with transition's the correct lead etc, now i have gone back to basics with her and doing loads of ground work lonlining mainly and 7 weeks on she so obedient and listens i dont think there is a quick fix to anything old fashoned schooling etc is the way.

How do you teach them that coltish behaviour is not acceptable? There are a lot of stallions out showing who behave extremely well in mare's company but when our youngster was a colt he was a nightmare & that was just around geldings!

I agree with sarahp - I struggled and struggled schooling my mare and three years on we're now pretty much perfect and the only things that have changed is my riding and her attitude! Shes still just as sharp I've just gotten my act together! I think manners definately start on the floor and to follow when your on board - she was all for dragging me here there and everywhere when I first bought her but not now!! Now we can leave her door open and she wont move a muscle and shes so much happier and content knowing there are ground rules. I also remember being told a good few years ago that give yourself 4 years with any horse - we're on year 3 now and if shes going this well now bring on year 4!!! Good luck with him!
