I have bought an Eqvalan Paste for Violet, who is due on 13th July.
She was wormed for tape worm in early March.
When is the best time to worm her with the equest, so the foalie will be covered?

persoanlly I wouldn't- Equest is stored in the muscle- so therefore I feel that follows that it could be transferred to the foal ! which I persoanlly feel is too strong for foaly- but up to you- I would use something very mild. my vet always advises to worm mare 3 days after foaling. Maybe ask your vet, then if anything happens you are covered.

As far as I know worming Violet would not cover the foal at whatever stage you did her anyway, it's not like vaccinations and antibodies where they can get transferred so that the foal has immunity for a time.
Best to check the manufacturer's recommendations or ask your vet.

Woops sorry OWL and Sarahp - should have said Eqvalan Paste.
I spoke to the worm count company and thats what they recommended?
When does the foal get wormed then?
I guess I thought it was like puppies - if the mother is properly wormed, the pups dont get born with a heavy worm burden? But then they get regularly wormed at specific times after birth?

You can worm as normal through pregnancy but check the label that it is suitable for in foal mares, Eqvalan duo was not licensed for in foal mares (not sure if it is now) but Eqvalan is safe. Equest is also safe but NOT Equest Pramox.
Im still not convinced as I have tried it but the school of though is you should worm your mare with Ivermectin within 12 hrs of birth to stop the transfer of worms which causes the "mucky" bum which I still believe is the foal heat but it is thought it is the transfer of worms at around 10 days.
Your foal should be wormed at around a month some wormers are suitable from 4 weeks others suggest longer but I usually choose an ivermectin type and worm at 4 weeks old. I worm foals monthly from that point until the following year where I move onto a normal worming plan.

I only ever use eqvalan on my heavily pregnant mares, Always check the instructions as a lot of wormers are not suitable for them especially the tapeworm ones. As for the wormer covering the foal there is a belief that if you worm your mare in the last 12 hours before foaling it enters the foals bloodstream and stays there long enough that when the cord breaks at birth the foal still has some protection. It also stops the migration of any threadworm to the mares udder when she releases the birth hormones that send the blighters straight to the milk supply!!! Most scours that foals have are from ingesting threadworm via the first drink of milk!! I always worm about 48hrs before birth as i am not convinced worming very close to partuition cannot upset the mares tummy (just my thoughts).
