I am now on my 2nd day without having a ciggie. I am ready for killing someone. I so want to quit though as I simply cannot afford to do it.
any hints, tips and encouragment would be greatly appreciated. I am not a very nice person to live with at the moment. Daughter is keeping a very low profile.

Hi skint, have never smoked myself, but my hubby had first ciggie when he was 9 years old, given by his brother!! Used to buy a bag of chips and spend the rest of his dinner money on Benson & Hedges. He gave up about 15 years ago, couldn't get on with the chewing gum, patches weren't invented but had a course of tablets from the chemist which wean you off the nicotine gradually. 15 years on and he says when he smells other people's smoke he still likes the smell and could still smoke one!!!
Good luck anyway, just think what you can do with all the money you'll save.

Skint, i gave up last May, i used patches and inhaler they were free of charge from the chemist.I smoked 20 a day and it is HARD... but just take one day at a time and even if you have one now and then dont give up giving up. I could smoke one now talking about it. I also think you should try and avoid people who smoke if you can.Good luck.

So if we're in the pub and theres a small lady standing on a chair blowing smoke into the smoke alarm, we'll know who it is . . . . . .

I gave up five weeks last Thursday, and went cold turkey from smoking 20-30 aday, I think one of the things you need to do is change your routine abit, for instance if you generally light up after tea in the kitchen, move straight away to another room, I got over my first few days by buying a few good books and only doing things I needed to do. any spare time was then spent sat upstairs reading my books, I was a bit cranky for a few days and gained a few pounds, put after three weeks joined the fat farm, so now I have lost just over half a stone in 2 weeks and saved £200 and yesterday had a great walk for 5or 6 miles and felt wonderful at the end of it.
Its certainly not easy, when you have that little voice in your head telling you that you have to have a cigarette, but you can do it, oh and another tip is to tell everyone around you that you are quitting and most will be very supportive, even the kids dident mind when I was nearly ripping my hair out, not to mention theirs.
Good Luck.

Well still doing ok. Got to confess that I had half a ciggie when I was working at the pub on Fri and Sat night, finding it a lot easier at home that I thought I would. I am determined to crack it but it is so hard. God know what its like coming off hard drugs knowing what I feel like when the craving comes on.
I am worried because I quite like smoking - well the social side of it and am stopping really for financial reasons and just hope I dont succom back to the dreaded weed
Thanks for everyones advice. Keep me going I will report in daily

I'm seriously thinking of giving up next week (couldn't this week as may have killed the children as it's half term) so getting prepared for next week, should I go cold turkey or do the patches, gum etc. help? trouble is I'm smoking more this week already worrying about next week

surely you mean smoulder......especially if theres any firemen about ! Met lots of firemen tonight, and Policemen, and Paramedics...............driving home from the special needs club my mate and I do, and only 30 seconds away from the turning to the yard when we came across a very nasty accident that had just occured. Two young lads in a car looked like they had lost control pinged off several trees and had finished at the side of the road. We were third car back and one of the lads was trapped in the car...the other was wandering around getting more and more agitated. My mate held the hand of the one in the car whilst I and a few others tried to calm the other..unfortunately he was getting quite violent and insisted on smoking when there was petrol etc over the road- the car was about quarter of the size it was when it was made and there was fluid everywhere.....................he smashed the car window in with his fist and had to be tackled to the ground by a fireman. I have only just got home and they were still cutting the other lad out an hour after we arrived at the scene. I hope he is ok. The emergency services were amazing not only dealing with the injured lad but controlling the other 'loose cannon'- you can't pay them enough in my opinion..........
