Goodness me KJM, thats me howling again. You are so brave to tell us your story and I hope the support you get back from HG helps in some small way. We all "feel" your pain, cos we know how we would be in your shoes, so just remember - you have all the support & sympathy that anyone could need xxxx Lots of love Sarah x Thanks Sarah. It is a great comfort to know I have so many friends out there as I can't talk about it but to be able to type it is easier. I hope I haven't upset anyone with my story as this is a very rare occurance and responsible breeding is usually a magical experience and problems like this are very few and far between. If anything I hope it may help anyone who has a negative experience to realise that life can take an unexpected turn and sometimes nature throws things at us that we can't do anything about but as long as we do our best we can have no recriminations - some things are out of our hands.

I think you have been very brave to tell everyone of your loss and how and what happened. I hope it has help you also to type about it. It reminds us all of just how things can go terribly wrong and just how quickly babies can go downhill with or without medical care, and how precious life is.

kayjayem, I am so sorry to hear your sad news. After losing my foal earlier this year, I know what you must be going through. Losing a foal is almost like losing a child or young family member, in time you will be so pleased that you took the photos and be able to look back upon them. My heart goes out to you.

Terribly sad, but well done for being able to share your experience. I've gone through a pretty traumatic week as my foal had to be tested for FIS and I had a 1:4 chance I would lose him, but thankfully his test has come to show he's a carrier - I can live with that.

Is that the Fell foal thing that causes foal fatalities? If it is I suppose in a way it's good that he's a colt as then you can have him gelded and he can't pass it on. I didn't realise it could be tested for, what a relief for you.

Kjm you were so supportive when I lost the twins a few months ago so here I am!!! I really do know what you are going through I felt numb for at least a week afterwards but I really do think you did the right thing taking pics I felt a bit strange taking photos of my two but I wasn't ready to let them go as someone said above it really is like losing a child. At least your mare isn't too worried it would be even more heartbreaking to watch her pining for her baby too. It definately affects us more than it does them! Big hugs to to you xx

Sorry to go off topic on your thread, but yes test only been available since February this year so I unknowingly bred carrier to carrier. Advice is not to geld carriers but to breed carrier to non carrier which has a 50% chance of breeding another carrier, but no chance of breeding a syndrome foal. The gene pool is too small to avoid carriers - I'm not aware of many stallions who have tested clear so far...although I haven't heard many results.

Thats interesting Guestless it's the same with the eye tests that they do for dogs. We had a client with a really good gun dog bit*h last of his line which was a carrier but he is advised to breed her with a clear dog so that she can only breed clear or carriers. That way she won't breed a positive but he can retain a clear to keep the line going and the carriers will be valuable working dogs as they will remain carriers but will never develop full blown symptoms. It will be the same principle I suppose. It's good they now have the test for Fell ponies as they willl eventually breed it out withoiut losing too much of the small gene pool. I presume all breeding stock will now be tested then you will only cross a carrier with a clear? Good news for the breed!
