Thanks so much everyone for all you lovely kind thoughts and pm's. I've only just got round to reading them as TBH I think I am in a bit of shock and I knew it would set me off again. I have never seen anything deteriorate so quickly nor anything as distressing and traumatic as a convulsing foal(and I've seen some nasties working for vets for 20 odd years!). The vet was fantastic, how the hell he managed to get to me in 15 mins I'll never know but I will always be very gratefull to him and for what he did for her. He thinks she had neonatal maladjustment syndrome, which can have a reasonable prognosis if not too severe but with the severity of her fits and the lack of response to sedation, (she ended up having pony sized sedation which had no effect and therefore had to have a sub lethal dose of pentobarbitone to put her into a coma), At least then she was peacefull but it was clutching at straws really and just hoping that when(if) she came round the fitting would be controllable and had not caused brain damage. She also had a steriod injection, again not ideal, to try to reduce any swelling in her brain. It was always on the cards that her poor little body would not be able to cope with the large amount of drugs she had been given but it was d**ned if we do d**ned if we don't so had to give it a try. At least she slipped away peacefully, it would have been terrible if she'd come round and started again as we had made the decision to pts if she showed any signs of convulsions before she was fully conscious. The mare is absolutely fine and hasn't shouted for her once but I think to be honest she hardly had time to bond properly and was more bothered about getting back to her best friend in the field. I took loads of photos of her as she truely was one of the most beautifull foals I have ever seen. I can't look at them yet but I'm so glad I have them to remember her by. Thanks again everyone you really are a lovely lot on here. xxx

Kayjayem that was a very brave and very touching post, i am so glad you did take some pictures as i know in time you will be able to look at them (just as i did when i lost my foal) I had a foal convulsing too and it is a very disturbing sight which would upset even the most hardened breeders. My mare did exactly the same as yours, it is as if they know before us what the outcome is going to be and sadly give up before we do. Breeding can be so hard when it goes wrong and is a timely reminder of how precious our horses are. Thinking of you as i know you will be shell shocked for quite a time, hugs to you and your mare ((((((((hugs))))))

We all "feel" your pain, cos we know how we would be in your shoes, so just remember - you have all the support & sympathy that anyone could need xxxx
