My youngster does a lot of work in walk with quite a loose hand and a good leg but he really struggles to bend particularly on one side. We use trot poles and cones as markers and so on but it is still really hard. Any tips anyone?

hiya.. when you have worked him and his muscles are warm ( only when warm) try the carrot game.. on the ground at his side get a carrot and make him bend to eat it, bending to his wither both sides, he will struggle so just gently to start with.. and also get his stretching down in between his legs... i would defo get physio out to just check him over.. high percentage of horses are stiff on one side more than the other.. lots of lateral work will help once he been checked over.. teeth, tack, your position etc... good luck xxxx

Ditto the others. Dont worry - am sure he will be fine, but definately get his back/spine checked by a professional. It will be the best money you ever spent! xx

I agree with the above The physio is money well spent! I have also done the carrot game, my mare used to struggle on one rein and the combination of the above and lots of slow bending work and circles certainly helped! Also I think everyone has a 'good rein' and a 'bad rein' my bad rein is definately the opposite to the hand I write with so even though I hate it I make sure I do plenty of work that way!!

I agree with the others! I've also been taught by my instructor to work in a diamond shape between C, H, X and M to encourage bending, and it can be ridden in walk/trot.
