I need a sweet itch rug and wondered if the Boett Type rugs are just as good as the genuine Boett rugs? Would be interested in hearing peoples opinions please before splashing out shocking amounts of money on one!!

do you mean the derby house one hunter? if you do - the rug is pretty generous on the neck so the ear holes stay in place. it covers the belly and has 3 surcingles to keep rug over belly. the neck is lined and hasnt rubbed either of mine who wear it, thier manes lie nice and flat. I would just get normal size for your horse, wouldn't say it is big or small really - it is generous on the neck to accomodate ear holes and has the extra log tail flap to protect the whole of the dock. I have found it fab so far

I have used Boett in the past & now have Snuggy Hoods (both types have been trashed by my pony so be prepared to do running repairs!). I believe that some of the Boett types are not very generous in their sizings but they are a lot cheaper so I have considered getting one & making my own adaptions!

These are fantastic sweetitch rugs - They are just fantastic and really cheap but just as durable as the Boett . Several horse on our yard have them, I would recommand them to all sweet itch suffers. www.solva-icelandics.co.uk/pagony.htm

I have recently bought one of the Pagony rugs from the link above, for a very very itchy horse who last year rubbed all his ears, forelock, mane, tail etc etc, and its proving very good so far. The hood/mask is an absolute must, which covers the whole face down to the nostrils, it is attached to the withers so stays in place all day, even when bent down grazing everywhere is covered, all under the belly etc, no holes for midges to get in, and much cheaper than a Boett.

He has one of these and he has not manged to reck it, I personally think they fit better than the boett and are more roomy. personl oppinions. He is really bad for itching since i have had the combination of Alva Sweettich controller and the pagony he is alot lot better.

I have tried all types of rugs on my now 5year old who has had really severe sweet itch since a yearling and the one I have found to be best is the Snuggy hoods one. He is in his 5th set (he keeps growing!!)I find the new fabric better than the old one and the fit better-I do have a tuck taken in the hood behind his ears as his neck isnt too long. I have one on him(from March) and one in the wash. I try to change them every 1-2 weeks. He has no signs that he has sweet itch now but if I take it off him too early or, as on one occasion, when he first had it on, took it off him thinking he was too hot!! he DESTROYED himself, completely rubbed himself RAW in just a few hours!! We even ride him in it now!! This one was recommended by the Vet. PS. He is black and his coat is AMAZING!! would never be without one now!

My darty is very itchy and I have had both the Boett and a boett type rug, the boett are a better fabric, but if you have barbed wire you may as well buy the cheaper rug and resign yourself to the fact you will be buying another! I buy a new one every year and put a normal fly rug over the top to try and protect it!

I'm a snuggy fan - had one mare in it and it worked really well, had another who completely trashed his, but I think he would have done anything. Some of my fences do have barbed wire along the top though.

I would say go for a boett, one of my connemaras has really bad sweet itch, when we bought her she had no mane. She lives in her boett for most of the year. We bought her as a 3 yr old and she's now 18 and I have only had to buy 4 boetts which I don't think is bad. I think the fabric is much more durable than cheaper rugs. I have tried a snuggy hood one but it didn't fit as well (kept coming over her head so she couldn't see) I had it altered twice by snuggy hoods and I still have the same problem. My advice go for a boett
