Hi, my mare has waxy nipples. a depression each side of her butt, keeps laying down and getting up, eating like shes never eaten before. she is due on 1 June and has foaled once before perfectly. she is 18. i dont know whether we are under starters orders or not. this has been going on since 4pm. she is not distressed at all and keeps peeing and pooing. what do you think??? shall i go to bed or not?? or and her ladies bits are much further out now than they were!!

Thats the million dollar question ;D Is her udder really tense? or is it still spongey? have you felt her chest? if so does she feel a bit warm? when you say she keeps pooing and weeing is she pooing often and in small amounts? these can be some of the early signs of labour as well as pawing the ground, biting at the feet, erratic rubbing against fences or stable walls. Waxing and running milk are one of the most obvious signs but there are exceptions to the rule ie: mares that do not let their milk down untill foaling, and mares that fail to show any wax on their teats. Well i bet i have gone and confused you completely now ;D I guess if you have any doubts best to err on the safe side and keep an eye on her. Maybe do a check at midnight, then around 3am if you do not plan to stay up all night. Good luck

she had sticky legs earlier today. she was rubbing her tail erratically on the stable, she had peed about three times in one hour. udders are firm, but very clean looking. if its early labour am i right in thinkin she may be like this for 8 hours!!

I would stay as it sounds like it's not her normal pattern and she may well be in early labour. As VJC states pawing and rubbing her backend are also good indicators she has started. Good luck

It does sounds as if it's imminent. We left my mare in similar cirucmstances last Saturday to go home for a few hours and went back to yard at 10.30 pm - voila foal was present!
