I have a young ex-racer who has a lovely walk and trot but being an ex racer her canter is more tearing round the school than nice and steady. She has improved since I bought her and has slowed down become more balanced and relaxed but I'm just wondering what I can do specifically to improve her canter?

My youngster used to do this and my instructor taught me to 'pull' and 'release'. So when he shot off to gently pull with both reins as if to halt/bring to slower gait but the minute he slowed down in the canter to give him the rein and praise.
Difference is though mine is a native that hasnt raced so dont know if it will be any use!! ;D

No problem libbigail i was also told to ride on a 20m then bigger each time, as long as he was steady. If she is an ex-racer though it may depend on how well she is with riding smaller circles if she has been used to galloping in straight lines. Good luck!
