Loungies are moaning about the H&H report. They forget that those responsible for it couldn't have had long to send it in and don't get gven much space so they have to decide either to grab a few stories or list results. Given the time limits and the Windsor results service being out of order they did a good job. Thanks Victoria, Trish and co. Must say the pro table was ridiculous. Some pro's have large yards whilst others are small.

Yes but this happens every week! They don't report some shows until weeks after, enough time surely to get stories from people other than Jayne Webber!

I dont think it is just about Windsor, generally H&H is fairly consistant on who they photograph and report on. The showing world consists of much more than the professional element.

"H+H reporters didn't have long to send it in". This is the 21st century and they all have mobiles etc. and we see the same old faces every week. Boring! Let's get some real photo journalism going not just the same types pf pictures. We can all see them online at the event photographers sites. Let's have something different. Lorry park pictures, working in, collecting ring looking nervous etc. after all so much more happens outside the ring for the short time everyone is actually in it.

Hollycane I couldn't agree more.
I do think though that those doing the reports don't have any control over the space they are allocated - I do think that a member on here who does reports for H&H once said, sometimes they can send in a lovely long report and it gets edited down before it is printed - it's the powers that be that have the ultimate responsibility for what we end up reading.
So for reference, H&H editor, personally I'd like to see less dressage and showjumping, more space allocated through the season to the showing section, and more 'human interest' type stories - for some people getting that ticket really is a once in a lifetime experience - and I'd like to hear about it!

"H+H reporters didn't have long to send it in".
Even I could take a fairly good photograph, upload it & email it on to someone on the same day.....

MM you have hit the nail bang on the head. the reporters are subject to the editors. And like you i want more human interest. As much as I admire the producers I dont need to read their story

Totally agree, H and H only concentrate on the big names! I get sick to death of seeing the same professional producers time after time winning, for goodness sake if they can`t win when they are being paid to do so then god help them...lets see more of the smaller people, those who put as much work into it but get little or no recognition!

There is no excuse for omitting a champion in a RIHS qualifier at Royal Windsor whether home or professionally produced.

OK - here we go again! I had decided not to bother to reply as this happens every year - you are d**ned if you do and d**ned if you don't in terms of reporting so am not going to comment on who gets a mention. BUT in terms of getting a report in can I say to those who say I could do it same day give it a try! I don't report on many shows and don't do the BIG ones, but I usually stay all day to report on all classes, get home exhausted then try to make sense of my notes. Look for the links and try and get 'new faces'. Information should be accurate and often that does mean phoning people after the show, when you are leaving a major championship on an excited horse you don't often want to stop to talk to a reporter so follow up calls are useful. That can take a day or two, I also work full time in a 'proper job' so do this in the evenings. Once report is finished I also have too much so have to cut to meet the wordcount deadline and H&H are very strict on this, they also want quotes;quotes;quotes (which most readers seem to enjoy). Next comes the results and that is why it does take time to get reports printed - the results are supposed to accompany the report. I for one would not want to be the one typing out the Windsor results in the pro-forma that has to be used for print, an average show takes me about 4hours to do and of course you have to wait for the results from the show sec. I am sure most big shows have them on line but one show I reported on this year I had to wait a week for the results. I didn't do the Royal Windsor report (certainly not important enough for that one!!) but before you jump on the bandwagon it is not as easy as it seems and unfortunately you just cannot cover everyone, and it is very time consuming to complete. Now watch my karma's disappear!

i agree with you CM having been a general reporter before. Very hard to get a report, photos and results in a short space of time. You do a good job.
However, i think the point of the thread isnt to knock h and h reporters skills, but rather the content they choose to focus on, i.e. the same producers. Would be nice to see amateurs in there more often.

I agree, I wouldn't want to knock the reporters as they have a difficult job, but more those 'back at the office' who decide what gets printed, and what doesn't, and what brief the reporters are given in terms of what to cover.

Thanks for that stormyskies and also rubyshoes and others for your empathy, much appreciated! Yes it can be frustrating as a reporter to have your hard work cut as well!!! and of course reporters have no say over photos. But I do think they are trying to address the balance a bit this year and make it more interesting and varied. The trouble is that when you hit the big shows it does tend to be the same people who win each week, especially county shows. Personally I liked the bit in about the Amateur classes at Windsor thought that was refreshing, but though the M&M coverage was a tad small, especially as it is an Olympia but again just personal opinion. Thanks to those above for some positive and understanding comments!

I think that some (I didnt say all!) of the reporters def favour their frends. You can look at a report from some shows that so and so has done and its guaranteed to have a big coverage of their pals.
As for quotes quotes quotes, 99% of the time H &H get the alleged comments so totally wrong it makes you want to cringe!!
I think reporters should be far more open minded instead of making a beeline for people they know, its not supposed to be a social outing for them. H & H editors should be encouraging them to include different people too if they want to improve their coverage and therefore readership!!

chloesmum do you get paid for your H&H contributions, or is this something you do as an interest?

I agree for the most part with what people are saying, and it is one of the reasons I no longer buy H&H. However, I will say that reporters are at the behest of editors, and editorial in a lot of cases had to be fitted around advertising as that is what pays the wages at the end of the day. I once did a half page 'ad feature' with a competition attached, and the answers to the comp were contained within the editorial. I discovered to my horror, on publication, that the editorial had been cut, and consequently people were unable to answer all the questions, on enquiry I was just told, it was unpaid space, and therefore when a late ad came in my piece was cut. Back to H&H and another bug bear with regards to amateurs getting recognition, a friends pony won its RIHS qual and went champion, my friend was interviewed by H&H, and was over the moon, on publication, her comments had been cut totally, and her ponies win was described as a 'surprise win', for whom exactly, for the pro's she beat on the day? It is a term only ever used in regard to amateurs and I find it to almost be derogatory.

I do get paid by H&H for reports, obviously I cannot speak for other reporters who work more full time for H&H, but I can honestly say you do it more for love than money!! If I worked out diesel to shows and time spend at the show and afterwards my hourly rate would be like a poor 3rd world worker!!! I guess it started for me as interest as we were at shows anyway and I wanted to encourage more coverage of BSPS shows, I also contribute for the BSPS news review again for love not money! I couldn't make a living out of it!!! So still have to do the day job. In response to 'friends' I think quotes are important and personally do try to ensure they are accurate, but you know what you would be surprised at some of the 'untruths' people tell you like ' this is his first time out' oh really so the fact that I have seen you at four shows already this season then was a mirage!!!!! also some editing is necessary - sometimes quotes are unprintable!!
