My vet got me wondering yesterday when asked about IgG tests. They always recommend having them done and end up doing 20-30 plasma infusions a year in response to results. They rarely end up with sickly foals so it does seem to be a positive thing to do, but I wondered how common it is to have them done as a matter of course.

I dont tend to have them done however if I felt the milk was poor, the mare is older, or the milk had run I would be the first to have them done. I do however discuss each foal with our stud to whether they need to be done, I have however had the odd ones done that I have been worried about and up to press have not needed plasma but wouldnt hesitate to follow up any birth as required, foals can go downhill so quickly and as we have the advantage of being able to medicate as required it is the way forward.

I get mine done as matter of course after losing a foal at a stud I worked at, I think for the sake of a £30 test why not then can give foal best possible start in life x

Only if I have cause for concern - but maybe natives are less likely to give problems than big horses/TBs?
