I think my mare has a bit of a fleshy tongue. It sometimes sticks through the sides of her teeth slightly when she has her bit in.
The bit doesnt seem to bother her though. Which bits are best for fleshy tongues?

Thin ones....I use a french link or lozenge loose ring with my lad who has little room in his mouth for a bit, although maybe one with a port may be another possibility?

I have a section b with a small mouth and fleshy tongue, who was shown as a stalion in- hand. This resulted in a hard mouth and a pony hat wanted to put his tongue over the bit, A spinner bit from fylde stopped the pny getting his tongue over the bit. I eventually moved on2 a myler hanging snaffle, which has completely independent sides, is very mild and doesn't pinch the ponies mouth at all. i would recommend this type of bit 2 anyone who has experienced the same problem

I am from the old school so have never tried any of these newer ranges- I use eggbutts with a link in the middle- usually a french link - I have tried a cambridge or majic snaffle- both those seemed to work well.

My friend, whose hubby is a vet, has been riding her horse in an egbutt with a french link since she bought him 8 months ago. I have been telling her that her horse is unhappy in the bit for months - but she knew best......... I am a myler and NS, KK fan. Horse dentist came out yesterday - assessed his mouth and told her to put the horse in a myler! His tongue is very fat. Horse is now in a myler and going 100% better than ever before = happy horse, happy owner! looks like I will have to investigate

I was like you owl until my daughter volunteered her then horse for a myler demo - different horse in the right bit for him. I have been hooked ever since - for the right horse of course. It opened my eyes to complexities of the subject that I never knew before, although of course like all of us played with bits to suit different horses and always was a double jointed snaffle fan anyway.

Well first of all, if pony is happy in what you're using, then stick with it. If he's trying to tell you otherwise though, then try and find something that he's happy in.
In my own very humble opinion, if a pony is sticking tongue out, over bit, opening mouth, leaning, backing off, whatever, then that's resistance and you need to remove the CAUSE of the resistance. If you strap them up, or use spinners, or tongue layers or whatever, then the discomfort will still be there and pony will never be 100% happy in their mouth.

I use Mylers, they give more room in the mouth and stop the gagging action of a normal bit.

The stallion i ride has an enormous tongue that sticks out and he almost can't shut his mouth. He has his teeth done regulary but will always stick his tongue out a bit when ridden we have tried every bit you can think of and found one he does it the least in. Don't think you would ever be able to stop him doing it as any contact at all will make him do it. The only way he wouldn't is not to touch his mouth. He does not resist as has won alot of showing classes. We do use a special noseband to stop him opening his mouth. Don't know what else to do unless he has liposuction on his abnormally large tongue!!!

Titch if your stally is happy in what you are using, then it obviously isn't an issue for you. I am interested though if you've tried bits of the shape that allow for the tongue, and if it made any difference for him? Not having a go at all, just interested what you've found suits him best as it's a question that gets asked a lot on here.

Hello! My gelding also has a fleshy tongue. I use a Nors Lotte (sp!) as my weymouth and a Salox for bradoon. The are both Neue Schule.
The Neue Schule bits are great too for snaffle, with lozenges.
I compete at county side saddle in these and Medium affiliated dressage.

I ordered a myler mullen mouth from the bit bank after reading these posts. It's arrived today and will try it tonight, fingers crossed it works for us.
