just wondering if anyone knows any rules and regs on how close a neighbour can land a helicopter next to livestock? Our next door neighbour is in the process of buying a helicopter and plans on landing it in his backgarden which is only a single track roads width from out fields which we use for grazing mares, foals and stallions and probably only 200yards from the stables and horsewalker. We have already had a horse killed a few years ago when an air ambulance landed in next doors field and drove a 3 year old through a hedge and into a ditch and whilst we were out the other night our neighbour came down in his helicopter whilst all the mares and foals were playing out and our other neighbours said they were running around like crazy, luckily no injuries. Also right next to his helicopter landing site on the other side is our local farmer who's barns and cows are even closer than our paddocks. i don't want to come across as a stick in the mud but i have massive concerns and it's also rumoured that to fund the cost of the helicopter he's going to give rides! Are there any rules or regs that state there has to be a set distance? I have been told that i can go to the council but the neighbours practically are the council.

unfortunatly we live in close proxmity to the air ambulance and police helicopter happily our ponies soon got used to the regular sometimes annoying {early am} flights . and no longer bother when helicopter lands or takes off.as far as the giving rides for pleasure i am sure he would have to be covered by civil aviation guidelines and have planning permission which would regulate the number of take off and landings on said site from local council

Our ponies just ignore the helicoptors which just appear over the horizon and fly above their heads sometimes with landrovers etc hanging below, newcomers very quickly become blase and our ponies really are bombproof, mortar proof and machine gun proof as these are all let off within a mile of them. If you can't stop him it may not be the horror you are worried about and it will make your stock capable of taking so much in its stride.

They will get used to it. We have army jet things flying over as well as low flying chinooks, we are on Dartmoor and they use the area for training. My ponies dont bat an eyelid

What a bummer! They should get used to it, I worked on a racing yard where the boss would land his helicopter on the lawn whilst we were leading the horses (often 3 yo breakers) back to the yard. They soon became accustomed to it!

When I had ponies they quickly got used to helicoptors. We live relatively near to an army air force base that very, very often has low flying helicoptors and jets. I imagine it is very diffrent though if you are worried about mares and foals. I would not like to say anyhing about legal implications but it would not surprize me if there is little you could do if the hleicoptor is flying form his own land. would he need some sort of licence though??

If you ring the Civil Aviation Authority - I am sure he would have to licence his home as an airfield other wise you are restricted to the number of take off & Landings allowed -I cant remember exact amount as a few years since I was into Helicopters - but I remeber thats what we had to do - but we always had helicopter & Horses together and they soon adjust - if you ring them they will advise you of his legal obligations etc Good Luck

He would also Have to apply for an operators licence to be able to give rides with full qualified commercial pilots, as Private Pilots cannot operate for hire or reward.... but CAA will give you all the info you need, try to have the machines Reg No when you ring them

My neighbour lands his dinky toy helicopter (he just changed the blue one for a red one) less than 200 yards from my stables and uses my hay barn as a navigation beacon. He needs no license from the CAA to land on his own property but must file flight plans before he arrives or leaves and he is restricted on the amount of flights he can make. He is very considerate and flies in a large loop to arrive at the landing pad without crossing my fields. I have had several new horses since I moved here, including a crazy 2yo TB filly. I have never had a problem with any of them being worried about his helicopter. We also live near "The Home of the Chinook Fleet" they use my barn as a navigation beacon. Much worse noise. Horses totally ignore it. Talk to your neighbour about his flightpath, you can't stop him landing but I bet your horses will ignore it and be just fine.
