I had a maiden mare in for foaling last month, and she spent time doing the same, then stopped as quickly as she started, same scenario, but I just kept an eye on her, maybe the foal is being a bit active.

I agree, just keep a very close eye on her but it is not uncommon for maiden mares to get a bit cross when the foal is starting to cause a lot of pressure/ kicks in the later stages of pregnancy.

I would think the foal is probably lying on something that is making her uncomfortable, it could probably move as quickly off as it has gone on!!!! If she isnt showing signs of colic I wouldnt worry too much if everything else is normal, check her temperature and vital signs to make sure nothing is out of the ordinary, and keep an eye on them over the next few days. I assume she is going to the toilet as normal.

Just a thought lovepink, has she been pigging out on the new grass??? sometimes preggy mares get greedy and forget they have not got so much room in there bellies!!! it could just be a build up of wind. Hope all is okay, keep us posted.

Ooooh dear I would be the same because I have never had a foal, but most pregnant ladies shift around this way and that trying to get comfortable in the late stages so there is no reason a mare should be any different.
Do horses like to arrange their own bed when they are getting near their foaling? other animals do and she might think your beautiful bed is all wrong.

That's a reflief because I was thinking shavings weren't right because they stick to the sticky baby and your baby would be spotted. I didn't like to say anything though because I don't know the first about having a foal and none of the knowledgeable people had mentioned it!
I would say she wants her straw straight away to get it ready in good time and who can blame her, get your finger out!

In that case, I hope Violet shall drop it quietly in the corner of the field whilst LP is out doing a dressage test. Just visualise LP's face when she goes to the gate to get her in and this little head peeks out from behind Violets tail! Oh the shock ! Oh the swoon! Oh the flushed cheeks! Priceless!

Lp - just think back to when you were pregnant, there must have been times when the baby moved and you were really uncomfortable for a bit. Its just the same - except of course you were able to check with the midwife!!

Sagey - Violet would never be so "common" as to lie down in a field! Goodness me, what a thought! Wash out your mouth with royal soap......! PMSL ;D ;D ;D

Sounds like active (or inconsiderate) baby to me too. Magic went through phases of mad galloping around the field a couple of weeks before she delivered and I'm sure she was trying to shake the baby away from somewhere uncomfortable

My mare did this about a month or so before she was due Lovepink - she dug her WHOLE bed out and I was moving the straw looking for a hidden baby! Agreed - probably getting restless as not 'that' long to go
