of the horse ( ) This would usually be an easy one, but said horse makes it difficult by it being frankly suicidal to try and hack out (we have pure road hacking, involving level crossings unfortunately)- this is a pure fear thing, one that will not be fixed or improved nor do i want to try anymore after an incident last year one that we were both lucky to even walk away from . He is completely different on a showground before anyone thinks hes a liabilty Schooling is there, have got the self carriage, good transitions extension etc. he is a lovely ride and i dont want to sicken him by schooling more than need be. he looks forward to his work and i dont want to loose this I was thinking either riding twice a day (i ride him up and down one road which is about a mile long before schooling for upto 30 minutes usually, will increase as he gets fitter) or lunging once riding once. i also have access to a couple of jumps which can add variety. just looking for more ideas really, what you do to keep your "un-hackables" fit (and sane!) thanks ;D

Do you have a gallops local to you? Great for mind and body (for both horse and rider!)

Find some hills! Transitions, constantly asking something else from him so he presumes nothing and is completely on the ball waiting and listening to you. My instructor always tells me to do bursts and we also do turns on the forehand to add something else in to make schooling more interesting as my lad is the master of boredom tantrums! I then do bounce jumps to fitten up too, and as for stamina....find a big field or track and just go!

I'm with colourful, I did it for years as our roads round here are now lethal. We are lucky in having lots of commons and things to ride on offroad though, not everyone has. Perhaps with a quiet nanny to start with if he finds hacking exciting and hasn't done it for some time. Hills are great for fittening, and lots of schooling can be done on hacks if necessary to keep him interested.

Is it just roads you can't do? Whereabouts are you?
I'm thinking places you can buy a day pass to hack around, places like Clumber Park, Dalby Forest, or any of the UK Chasers courses?

yeah just roads/traffic
We are just on the border between west/north yorkshire, 5 minutes from the selby fork
My friend lives in the dalby forest and it isnt very horse friendly not to mention still about and hour away- bikes, huskys, cars etc
clumber park is that wakefield way?
not sure what uk chaser courses are
thanks btw

Why dont you get a pass for balkholme cross country, 5 mins from howden? Not sure how much it is now but is open about 9 months and is a lovely x country course, but you can avoid any jumps if you only want to hack? If you went 2 x a month it would not be too bad, or escrick park is fab, does passes the same, up the A 19 before york. One off is £ 15, google it!
