We are expecting our first foal at the end of July and were wondering when you put your mares back in foal. Is it on the foaling heat? or is it best to leave it a while?

I have done both, all i would say is only cover on the foal heat if the mare has cleansed properly, if she is an older mare or has had lots of foals her uterus might need a little more time to recover. Also obviously some mares as still very foal proud so soon after foaling. best of luck.

Normally not on the foaling heat but the next one - I feel the foal heat is used to clear out the uterus, and they don't get in foal as easily on that one. And if covered and they take on the next one they will foal around the same time next year. If sending them away, I preferred to wait a bit for the foal to be stronger before travelling them to stud too. But if going to a stallion at home and all well as vgc says I'd chuck them out with the stallion ready for the foal heat and see how they go, especially if it was a late foal and I'd like her to foal early next year. All to gain and nothing to lose.

We would always take our vets advise on that one as it would depend on if the mare had contracted back correctly from the pregnancy, you can infect them if shes not right then its very difficult to get them sorted again when late on for another covering!!! Our vets dont like to cover on foal heat but they will go with how the mare is. We also have done both!!!
