why oh why do people do it, have seen over the last week or two people showing foals that are only a week or so old. Poor things, let them grow and get some strength and vitality first. This isnt bit*hing, the foals still look like newborns and whats even worse is some of these people even have the foals date of birth on their website have they no shame shows have a rule stating no foals under 3 weeks may be shown for a reason. why are they so desperate for a piece of ribbon to risk precious little ones who havent even got any immunity to outside bugs at that age

It is naughty i have seen 1 or 2 this year that arnt 3 weeks old, we state 3 weeks old, but sometimes you cant proove it as some come out better developed and less crumpled, i would be worried about them picking up bugs etc afetr all my fully vaccinated pony as a yearling went down with a flu strain ........ well virus type thing, that must have come from a show.

yes well not only is it obvious as they are crumpled up but when people are stupid enough to put the foals DOBs in the public domane which proves they are only a week or 10 days old, then they are going to be in the firing line and should get the book thrown at them but it wont happen will it.

babies should not be shown at all, not even over 3 weeks! what is wrong with people? what about letting mum and baby enjoy their time in the field? what good does it do taking babies out? please someone share with me, the benefit of taking foals out?

We show our foals, but I dont do it if they are under 6 weeks old, and even then they have to be physically and mentally mature to withstand the travel and time at the show and in the ring. They get so very tired when babies and it needs to be a nice day out with mum, with room enough in the lorry for a lie down snooze and only do the one class. I cant say we have had any problems, but they may only go out two or three times a season and late on at that and only the early foals have travelled further than 45 minutes in the lorry. We had one particular little chap who hit the ground running, and just loved going out, both his parents love their showing and going in the lorry, and he took to it like a duck to water, he was happy and showed himself beautifully, he was shown twice as a foal and won and gave his little best each time, being at home was nice, but even as a young baby, going out was a huge treat, even practising his 'trot-ons' was a pleasure, and for him shows were a chance for everyone to see how fabulous he was. Back in England after two years in a field in Ireland, he has'nt forgotten a thing, does his stuff and for him, its the best thing ever. For a small relatively unknown stud, getting him out enabled us to get a top home for him and also gain a premium price, we dont breed to keep, but to get the foals seen and sold to the best homes possible, we are'nt well known enough to sell from the field on name alone.

theres nothing wrong with showing foals providing they have been well handled, and are not dragged around the country to every show going - there is however - in my opinion - something wrong with showing foals under 3 weeks - partly as its a rule so should be adhered to and also they are physically and immunologically not strong enough for such a situation, also i hate to see foals literally halter broken on the day of the show - thats dangerous for both foal and handler!
