any tips on bridling a head shy horse? she got beaten up in the past and wont let me touch around her ears. i have checked theres no cause to make the ears painful. i always take baby steps to touch her ears. today i had to build the bridle around her head with the head collar still on.

I've dealt with quite a few over the years with this problem, I have always used a headcollar with a throat clip. As there is no bit, you can have it a bit loose and can draw it quite a way above the ears to get it on or off. I find over a reasonably short space of time it does de-sensitise them and eventually putting the bridle on becomes second nature. One of our mares is a total trial over her ears, you cant get near her to clip them out even twitched she throws a fit, and snipping the 'spuds' out, which now is all I do, with the scissors is an exercise in distraction, but she got over her fear of the bridle touching her ears without much trouble using this type of headcollar and allows herself to be bridled no problem.

You can get cheek pieces with clips to clip the bit on. It makes it much easier. Put the bridle on easily and then put the bit in mouth, clip on to cheeks.
