She is only 4 and has been broken for nearly a year now....I have mainly done fun rides and hacking with her, but now i want to start schooling her, the trouble is she has endless amounts of energy. She always wants to go fast whether it is at trot or canter....I seem to be able to get her more collected in canter than trot. She is not dangerous or silly just fast....iv been doing lots of circles, changing the rein etc I lunge her before i get on and that works for about 10mins but once she has got her breath back we are off again at full speed... I want to make it clear she is not taking off with me, she just wont go nice and collected.....iv been working on her out line in walk and its coming on nicely but trot her head is right up looking at everything that is going on! I just would like some ideas of what i can do with her to get her to think about what she is doing and slow down.... Thank you in advance

Transitions, working doing lots of serpentines, circles change of rein etc, trotting poles possibly placed on the circle to help make her use her brain. Id be tempted to circle off as soon as she tries to go faster.
Has she had a break from being ridden since breaking?

She sounds like she needs a bit of variety in her work or she gets bored.
With my mare we backed her rode her away gave her a bit of education, then gave her some time off to chill. Just asking as wondering if it may be some sort of evasion/boredom or her objecting. A friends mare is the same, hence why he now does endurance and she can go all day!
My girls hate the school with a passion, so i only go in there every now and then, i either ride in the field and hack out. Is she the same wherever you ride her?

you need to keep her head busy and in work mode by the sounds of it, lots of transitions, change of direction, circles etc. lovepink has hit it on the head, very good advice

Could say try all the various schooling exercises, etc. However, I did once have a mare just the same. Everything with a purpose and a big purpose! We're off, power walking, totally happy in herself, not being naughty or strong and you could school her all day and she would be just the same. A very independant, confident and happy in her own skin mare. Never ever naughty and completely bombproof.
What can you do, if that is the person, you cannot change that person and turn them into something they are not. I agree, endurance, though my mare went to a showjumping home where nothing touched her in a jump off and she never touched a fence.
Just thought of something else, if she is like the mare I am talking about, she will never tire and the more you work her, the fitter she will get. It isn't fizzyness that you can take the edge off, it is tremendous inbuilt stamina. My mare was perfectly quiet and relaxed at all other times, just munched in the field and when tied to the lorry, she was like this from day one. She was also stunningly beautiful and a pleasure to have around.

Agree with everyone else, lots of transitions not just in the school but when hacking as well. When schooling plenty of rein changes,20m circles, serpentines, half halts. But as S & O says maybe thats how she is and will never change!!!

Agree with the transitions etc.. This is exactly what Gonzo is like, have turned him away for about a month now and havent done any sort of work with him (ridden/lunging/freeschooling), hasnt been sat on and now I've brought him back into gentle hacking he is so much more chilled! Havent tried him in the school yet though! Transitions were working before i turned him away but he just needed a break.

S&O she sounds just like your mare, safe as houses not silly just thinks that we are going somewhere everytime we ride....lol......she is part bred arab and her sire was a competition pony, so did lots of jumping which lillie has shown natural talent for......the scary thing for me is I hate jumping!! i will do it...just dont like to do it alot and i think she would love to have a jumping career...maybe a should have some jumping lessons on her to get my confidence up?

As your girlie is only a baba, I wouldn't go jumping or doing anything that might encourage her forward nature. Do the quietly stuff, the schooling and going out with quiet horses and riders on hacks. Don't stick her in the middle or at the back which will just frustrate her. Rather like us stuck in a queue and getting cross with people fannying about. Walk her alongside and if she marches too far ahead just quietly and calmly do a big circle and return to the others. Of stop her and just wait for the others but only do this if she waits quietly and doesn't start getting fussed up.
She may well slow down herself but, if she doesn't, you best start having some lessons on a schoolmaster and enjoy doing the things your lovely mare will be best at. Actually horses with this amount of energy and power are capable of producing fabulous piaffe and other similar movements easily.
Soonest though, get an instructor in to check your seat, there are lots of thusting buzy bums around and owners don't realise they are doing it. You need a really quiet butt on your girl you should be able to produce a different walk simply from your body language. See if you can do it in the school, think 'slow slow' if you get nothing, then really visualise a monster at the top of the school and you don't want to go near, whatever your body does with this though gives you all the aids for slow, back off. It is interesting.

i had the same with my show pony, he was totally safe and well mannered, just liked to stride out, its just a case of making them think for instance when you go in for a schooling session give yourself an aim such as improving bend, you could do 3+4 loop serpentines, spirals etc also, do you find if you give her rein she will go more forward? if so practice giving and taking the rein on circles lots and lots it really slowed mine down

Agree with all of the above, just keep her interested lots of transitions circles serpentines. Thinking "slow" works surprisingly well i find, when trotting just really push the weight down through your heels and say sloooooooooow to yourself
