Oh no may!! My mare has taken to twins both times that we have AI'd her first time round. I have never seen triplets scanned before though!! The AI technician tried to squeeze one the first year, but sadly she lost both. Then took fine with one next time round. I hope your mare copes ok and manages to hold on to one. I know how you're feeling so all sympathy heading your way :-)

thanks horseyll81
This is her second time of AI and im not sure we will bother with a third if she loses everything, so fingers and toes crossed.
Cant believe my luck, just hoping and praying everything goes ok.

Im sure your vet is experienced at squeezing twins/triplets and as long as they separate easily so he can move the pregnancy away from the existing there should be no problems, we regulary see twins and triplets squeezed and the mares come back with single pregnancies and are fine, in fact one of mine has just been scanned into embryo after a twin had been pinched.
Sometimes we have doped the mares if they are very close together or difficult to get to or taken the mares back out of the stocks to try and separate and squeezed them a little later as they do move at this stage.
Its not the AI that causes it, it is the mare ovulating twice or three times and as it is via AI it is easily seen and treatable, if the mare had been just "covered" the vet may not have been aware there was a chance of triplets so it is actually in your favour!!!!
Good luck and im sure she will be fine, fingers crossed. It is bad luck if she looses the single pregnancy afterwards but obviously it can happen.

Dont worry to much it is a real simple process, as long as you have an experienced vet. I assume your vet will scan again a few days later to check the remaining pregnancy is still viable and growing, we usually scan either 3 or 4 days afterwards, looking forward to next year and pics of your beautiful baby!!!!!
I usually tell our vet to make sure theyve pinched the chestnut colt out which she often assures me she has, in fact ive had two pinched out this season, as Trevors mum also had twins!!!! So I will tell you next season if she did remove the chestnut colt!!!!!!!

I agree with holiday, a lot depends if they are easily seperated as sometimes the bruising/fluid can cause the remaining twin/triplet to perish. I had a mare that concieved twins and had one pinched but sadly lost the other over the next few days. Although I have heard of triplets before, and also heard of twins being pinched to leave a remaining healthy foal. Both of the other cases i knew went on to have a healthy full term foal .

Hi everyone, took her to stud today and she was scanned but only with twins this time, one is really big and healthy the other is very very small, to small for them to squeeze today so we have to go back on wednesday, will keep you posted.

Oh keep us posted!
I have a mare that was scanned last week with twins but the eggs are stuck together. The membrane between the eggs is too thin to squeeze one without damaging the other so instead we are waiting till Friday when she will be scanned for heart beats. Hopefully one will of absorbed but if not the vet will poke and prod one of the eggs till it dies :-( sounds very gruesome and quite sad but fingers crossed it will work and we'll have one heallthy foal!

Fingers crossed it will have either absorbed one or your vet will be able to pinch the smaller vesicle. Also to you hairys!!!!!!!! It sounds to me like the smaller one isnt growing so maybe naturally absorbed if at this point still too small to pinch?

Just letting you all know went back today for scan and everything is fantastic, the squeezing of the other never bothered her, and the vet confirmed today that she has a nice big foal left that has now started attaching and is looking really good. So pleased with my clever little girl, thanks to everyone for their support will keep you all up todate with progress. Now we can start to look forward to the thought of a new arrival next year, hooray

Great news may - glad it has been successful. At the end of the day, even if things had gone badly it is IMO much better to lose an embryo at this stage, than take a chance and perhaps lose the mare during the birthing process.

Our mare was scanned yesterday after having one of her eggs "beaten" on Friday and it looks to of been successful! One more scan later this week or next just to be 100% sure though. :-)
