Being fit and healthy and riding the size of animal that suits and can carry your weight should be what we all have at the forefront of our minds. Having been watching, judging or participating in showing and riding in general for the past 30 years I can categorically say riders are getting bigger (both taller and fatter). Is there pressure to be thin? It's out there somewhere but it doesn't look like many people are taking any notice.

I agree, if severely underweight, a person maybe weak, but really, how many severely underweight people do we see in the show ring? I haven't seen any, overweight on the other hand, as Hollycane says, people dont seem to be taking notice of any pressure to be slim. Your skin and flesh is there to hold your insides in, nothing more. Ladied squeezed into jods and show jackets really does not look good at all. Even if on a show cob. Yes a suitable mount should be chosen but some would look out of place on a brewery horse. No matter your size, you should still be healthy and fit and i cant see that several extra tyres helps with this at all.

Precisely Not really! having rode many very large, naughty horses at only 8 stone myself and a nice, muscular, size 8, i can guarantee strength has nothing to do with it! Though i would look stupid in the ring on a huge cob! Fat is not pretty, no matter what you ride! totaly agree im 5ft 10 and weight at lowest 10 stone and at most 10.5 stone , and am all ways asked if ive lost weight , people think its ok to call me skinny but not pc to call people fat !!! even some of the l/r and first ridden jockeys are fat ! i think it totaly ruins the pic , im not talkin about rounded figures im talkin about obese or even morbidly obese looks awfull and is unfair on horses or ponies .

My 15 year old daughter is around 5'8" and probably weighs around 9 stone (We dont have scales!) she is a size 8, she is so concious of being too tall, however there is nothing she can do about that. At 11 she was on a 14.2 and since 14 has been on an intermediate.
If you look too leggy that can also spoil the picture!

There is another factor to be slim- you are often healthier. In any hospital you look around & see how being overweight gets you.

Agreed, but you can also kill yourself with an eating disorder. I think what the original poster was talking about was the pressure to be unrealistically thin in order to make a better picture for the show ring. I think we are all agreed that the middle ground is healthy and too far either way is not.

I dont think waiting meant anorexic, may have missed it, but i did not see anyone else say pressure to be that thin, just slim?
Anorexic is totally different and it rather annoys me that people often presume, slim people do not eat! There are lots of doctors turning people away for operations, due to being overweight, i know im very healthy at the size i am and i agree, not all obese/fat/overweight people would be healthy at my size, but they still need to slim down. So much emphasis on ponies not being overweight, but what about the riders? I'd far rather see long legs, than a fat rider who is just as out of breath as the pony they are sat on!

Well I am another who can eat what they want and generally don't change weight - I am 5"2 and always between 7 1/2 stone and 8 stone.
Don't think anyone is ever completely happy with their lot in life. My whinge is that at my size, yes I get to ride the little ponies no problem, but I look ridiculous on anything over 15hh. I can ride them but if we are discussing overall picture I look silly. This is why I personally don't like the age restrictions on classes. I think it should refer back to suitability for the horse / pony you are riding.
I definitely need to tone up a bit - the usual wobbly bits that women get - we all have them!

How many other physical sports athletes do you find to be obese, not many. Riding is a physical sport and therefore it is in your best interest to be fit and healthy. Lets be honest a very seriously overweight jockey is not a pretty site either on a horse or a pony.
It's a bit like swimming, lots of people of all shapes and sizes can do it, as with riding, you do not have to be the perfect size 10 . So it is all down to the individual and how far they are willing to go, with their personal appearance in order to achieve what they perceive as being the perfect image.

Is that another problem then? Many riders assume riding is their exercise and do nothing else to keep fit? I cycle, swim , jog and go to the gym, some people can lose weight much quicker than others also....if they just try I've had to buy a new smaller show jacket this year in a 12 due to weight loss but due to my build I don't know if I'll ever fit into a 10. People are healthy at different weights and sizes due to their build.

I said you do not have to be the perfect size 10 in order to enjoy riding. A lot of it is how you feel about yourself. Like all sport done as a hobby is suppose to be enjoyable.

Why is size called, called the perfect size? im an 8 and i'd look stupid and wobble if i was a ten?! My flesh fits my body how it is and i would not want to be any bigger, or indeed smaller! You can have a perfect size 8 or even size 12 body you know! Sophieand callum, in answer to your question, no, too many people do not do any other exercise, other than riding and lets be honest, alot of it is hardly physically demanding, once your body has got used to riding! How many people whinge about their weight and then jump in the queue for a burger at a show, and then whinge about slim people and how they cant possibly ever eat! If i didnt eat as much as i do, i would not be able to do such a physically demanding job as i do now! and no, its not because of what i do that i am slim, i have always been this way and will, make sure, i stay this way! nothing less flattering than tyres in jods!

I wasn't meaning a 10 was perfect I just won't fit into anything smaller than a 12 ever I don't think I can tell you that cycling is fantastic to get you fitter, I cycle to and from the yard everyday and that involves alot of hills and I have found it helps even more with riding due to you building up leg muscles both in riding and cycling they kind of work well together As for burger vans at shows...doesn't take much to have a little coolbox with some sandwiches and salad etc from home does it

Did not mean you personally thinking size 10 is perfect, that just seems to have been mentioned a few times on this thread.
Tell me this, how many riders are mums? and how many of those mums use the car to drive to school? i know many mums who do this and yet they only live a short distance from the school, some have to travel further, so cant help it, but, in general people are getting lazier and therefore getting fatter! Atleast with ponies, owners can blame all sorts, (whether true or not!!) like the weather making grass grow all year, but really, what excuse do humans have, for laziness and not eating properly?
If you eat until you are almost full, instead of stuffing til full, your chances of losing weight and remaining slimmer, are greatly increased! top that up with plenty of exercise and you are on your way!
Another thing, i seriously do not know, one single fat person, who is GENUINELY happy in their body! now come on, we all know they would be so much happier if they could lose the pounds, im sorry, but that is human nature!

No you dont i agree, like the ponies with health issues, cant always be helped! But im sorry when i was at school there was the odd fat kid in the playground, now, im sorry but its true, there is the odd "skinny" kid in the playground!
Does that not tell people something? And of course mums put weight on, 3 kids by 30, im sure didnt help, yes there are reasons, but im sorry, there are far too many lazy people around who do not eat correctly! Guess they all have health problems then?

No not at all SOME people are fat for a reason but i know people who battle constantly with wieght issue's a i would bet they would beat most people around the block on a bike!! 3 kids by 30 because i didnt want to be an old mum my choice ...like i said i have never been small even when working 4 jobs at 18yrs old riding up to 15 horses a day from polo ponies to dressage horses and hunting twice a week .
I dont think it is right for people to judge others for your information all three of my children are of slim build and very active even my son with cerebal palsy.
I agree kids are becoming bigger but i dont agree with judging others!!!! or tarring every1 with the same brush.

I agree kids are becoming bigger but i dont agree with judging others!!!! or tarring every1 with the same brush. Well said fox111, some people are a little too quick to judge I feel. Also I think a certain person is keen to put others down, and if it wasn't over their weight, it would be something else. Definite undercurrents in this thread.

Indeed. I posted a thread on monday, feeling a bit sorry for myself because I had a bit of sunburn. When I arrived at work, one of my colleagues was absent, turns out her father had passed away suddenly. And yes, it definitely makes you put things into perspective.
So sorry for the loss of your friend, and big hugs to her little girl. xxx

I am not "having a go" i am stating facts! there is a difference! Likewise not having a go at your choice to have 3 children young i think thats a smart move personally, i stated it maybe didn't help. So dont be so quick to presume someone is having a go, i am not! I also stated there are far too many lazy people around i did NOT say all fat people are lazy, did i?

Really? so you wouldn't have, say, hair extensions or perhaps fake nails? We all do stuff to improve our appearance, nobody's perfect you know!

Things like that are not your body though, are they? that is hair and nails, no, i wouldn't change a single thing about my body at all. I dont want anything bigger, or smaller, i have no wobbly bits what so ever, nor do i have bones sticking out, so, as i said!

whydo I am very, very jealous of your size 8 figure. But a wise old woman once told me that by the time you hit your 30's you have a choice. You choose your face or your figure. Her point was that if you are too slim for all of your life once you hit 30 instead of it being attractive having a slimmer figure you appear haggard and drawn. Probably emphasised by spending too much time smoking, reading and squinting at the interenet late into the night. I and probably lots of others made a choice a while ago and I chose my face. I may be bigger than a size 8, I may never be skinny but I dont really care! At least I'm bonny! And I hope my daughter follows in my footsteps. Its so important for mums to set a good example for their daughters dont you think? I'd hate for my daughter to see me having food issues, being constantly on a diet to get a size 8 figure like yours or making harsh comments about people who are bigger. Far better a relaxed but healthy attitude to food and diet I think

Is a darn good job i dont have to spend my time worrying about dieting then isn't it? No, would not want to set a bad example, thoroughly enjoyed my steak, chips, peas and Diane sauce tonight as well as cheesecake for pudding! I find it very sad that young girls may worry too much about their bodies. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder amumwithapony

Ah, but what's on the inside is far more important, in my opinion. Beauty is only skin deep after all.
