Hey, My horse was clipped 2 weeks ago and as a result got sunburn on eithr side of his withers (this did not affect him ridden) the sunburn has now scabbed. He has never had btue before but we gave him some to take the swelling down and also put a new uv protective fly rug on in the field. the day after he came in from the field in only small little lumps on his shoulder both sides and on one side he has more a few on his body and the odd one on his bum. although he is not covered in them thjere is quite a few. Anyone have any idea what they could be and how i could desperatley get rid of them, they have been there for 2 days please help!

Little lumps it could be almost anything. Your poor gee gee hasn't got any of his natural skin protection as you have clipped him. Lord only knows why, in summer. If the lumps are small, round in shape and slightly weepy they could be a bit of acne, sometimes brought on by strong sunshine. Non weepy could be bites or a slight allergic reaction. For the sunburn to have scabbed it must have been 1st degree burns. I would look at his skin very carefully before you ride him again as you may be cuasing more trouble than you think. Think about how painful it is just having clothes on when you are sunburnt. Try and turn him out at night as the rug may irritate as it's synthetic.

Are you using garlic in feed as a fly deterant as can produce an allergic reaction similar to what you have described

Why on earth did you clip in the summer? Has your pony got Cushings? You must certainly not ride until the burns have healed. The lumps could be unconnected, they could be bites. As hollycane has said keep the animal out of sunlight. If twere mine the vet would be visiting.

the lumps could be caused by sweat rash, my cob gets this when he is clipped out through the summer and has to wear his lightweight rug. I apply sudo cream and aloe vera cream and it tends to keep any lumps at bay. If your horse is grey and has to be clipped out in summer i would recommend udder cream to stop any burning.

One of my ponies always gets bumps after clipping which go relatively quickly-think it is some reaction to the clipper oil!!!

Id guess fly bites! How come you've needed to clip him now?

wow - everyone so quick to jump on the poor post starter for clipping her horse in the summer - i would automatically assume she owned a cob as usually they do get clipped all year round - i would guess the lumps were as someone else suggested a sweat/clipper rash. keep the rug off for a bit and apply udder cream or sudocream to sooth the lumps - it should settle fairly quickly.

I'd suggest calamine lotion to sooth his skin, maybe mixed with a bit of aloe vera. We used to clip or SJer's through summer, they looked better at show's that way, personal preference and depends what you're doing with your ned......

Little bumps could be reaction to fly bites or something he has eaten causing an allergic reaction. You could ask your vet for some anti-histermine pills. Some folks give hayfever tablets, but I don't know how many.
Sudocream on the sunburn will help with the sunburn healing.
I used to have to clip our old gypsy cob and clydesdale a couple of times in the summer as they got such thick coats and for the first couple of weeks afterwards they had fly rugs on and if the sun was very strong, I changed these to a summer sheet. I also would put a no fill t/o on if it turned wet and windy until the coat had grown a little for protection.
