My friend has a beautiful welsh d mare who is very susceptible to lami and has equine metabolic syndrome. Daughter is going to uni next year and she is stuck with what to do. She would never sell her but with daughter at uni she can't keep 2 so would need to sell her own riding horse which is a real shame.
The mare would be a cracking match with my stallion and is a really. Good mare with a proven perfirmance record and good welsh breeding.
But would pregnancy be viable with her lami tendencies and met syndrome as her weight is kept right down?
Thanks
The obvious source of advice would be a vet but was just curious before I mention it to her.
Just to add, the lami she got in winter when snow was on ground. She is in during day and out at night with muzzle

Dont know a lot about equine metabolic syndrome, however having just a quick search picked up on one documentary that briefly mentioned "Affected broodmares show unusual estrous cycling, which makes them incredibly difficult to get pregnant." www.ker.com/library/Equinews/v9n2/v9n214.pdfIt would be something I would definately talk to a "stud" vet about as I know our normal prone lammi horses are brill with a foal at foot and not much to worry about however as an in foal mare are just as susceptable to lammi as normal. Wouldnt really know what to advise.

Yes i agree with holiday, you really need to discuss the implications with your vet. A friend of mine has a pony that suffers diabetes related lami and she was advised to put her in foal to stave it off, it did work but obviously you cannot keep breeding foals as an answer.

My main concern would be - as I know nothing about it - would it be hereditary?

putting a lami prone mare in foal will help her but i know nothing about EMS
one of my mares gets frost induced lami in the winter but never gets lami in summer.

My little pony mare has laminitus but when she is in foal or feeding a foal she does not suffer with it and is a much happier pony.
