I know this is a long shot but has anybody any ideas on why my 11 year old male dog suddenly wont sleep at night if i am not on the settee with him??? It gone on for a week now he just howls and wakes the whole house up if left. No sleep is killing me as he is a big gsp and we dont both fit on the settee very well to sleep. Think its seperation anxiety but dont really want to get another dog as he is now 11 and i could be back to sqaure one in a couple of years.

Has he gone deaf and cannot hear you? I know it sounds daft but they are good at covereing up deafness. They can get quite disorientated. It might be time for him to be able to come up onto the landing at night......

The reason a dog has so many friends is that he wags his tail instead of his Tongue.

take him to bed with you... if you dont want gim in your bed, put him in a crate..poor boy.....its unusual to get seperation anxiety at that age.. perhaps something has upset him in the house.. strange noises etc....
I had a similar thing with one of mine that wouldnt stay downstairs on her own... she got over it eventually.. but I took her upstairs for a while even though there were 3 others downstairs with her...

i would be tempted to let him howl, he is doing it as he knows you will get up and sit with him, if you don't get up he will soon realise he is howling for nothing

Is he in some discomfort from arthritis or similar ? have you redecorared or changed anything which has unsettled him as he is older?

Deafness would be my first thought. When my old dog went deaf she was moaning on and off all night and I would be getting up to let her out for a wee or see if she needed a drink or whatever. In the end I got another rescue dog(took her with me to choose a friend) and never heard another peep out of her from day one. She just needed the comfort of someone with her.
