our first foal arrived at approx 7am today, we did not see the birth but arrived just as filly was trying to stand. she has sucked but seems restless, lying down, getting up, little roll (just the one). we are not sure if it is flies annoying her as there are a few or whether she feels a bit uncomfortable. she looks like she has passed meconum as there are slight signs around her back end but we have not actually seen it happen. not sure if we are worrying for no reason. vet is coming out in 10mins to check her but what do you all think? is there anything else we should or could do?

Hope all is okay, meconium can cause a lot of trouble as sometimes they can seem to be passing it ok even when that is not the case! I have had a few foals with hard marbles of meconium forming after they have already passed some! my saving grace is administering a human micro enema before the marbles get any harder and cause a blockage. Sometimes foals can get a little greedy and get a build of of gas which can also give them a bit of a belly ache. You have done the right thing calling the vet as a foal should be lying comfortably after feeding and passing the meconium. Best of luck, keep us informed.x

Totally agree with vjc we also use a "fleet" enema to help and clear any meconium, they usually fed and settle afterwards!!! Im sure your vet will sort her if she is feeling a little tummy achey

hello everyone, drama over - vet gave her an enema - vjc & Holiday you were quite right there were hard marbles. we were so worried though, I guess it is quite normal. She was so much happier even 5 mins later, quite amazing really. she came a couple of weeks earlier than we expected. She had a tet jab when vet came, but we hadnt flu jabbed mare 4 weeks before she foaled so should we flu jab the foal before she goes to stud in coule of weeks? sorry, we keep reading books but still not sure what we are doing!
lovepink - pics will follow shortly, she is so cute and perfect! we are so lucky

Thats brilliant news, no you dont cover the foal (start course) with flu until 6 months old, we used to do them earlier but the vets seem now to say not before 6 months. Tet is all she needs!!!!
