This is following from a thread in the LR discussion - ok at a slight tangent! I find it difficult to believe that ponies are ill-treated if they don't perform to the expected level (re 'it was taken round the back of the lorries and thrashed'). I have a NF pony who at has been placed first, last and middling. But wherever we are placed, she comes out of the ring knowing that she is going to be fussed over and waiting for her obligatory treats. The trust that she has in all humans is so tangible and so valuable that I could never ever imagine it being abused. This trust means that people of all ages and abilities can ride and handle her - yet she is not a total plod. This trust also means that because I usually go to shows on my own she will, if necessary, wait outside the loo or secretary's tent for me or beside the ring if I need to walk the course. The only danger that presents itself is other kind people catching her as a 'loose' pony. I am probably preaching to the converted here but if you see anyone ill-treating ponies or horses, please don't hesitate to report them or at least let other people know because an audience will hopefully deter the mis-treater.

It must have been a good 5 years ago now, it was when stowe still held PoniesUK qualifiers...workers and riddens. We saw a lady beating a pony up....NOT in private, but IN THE PRACTICE RING. We held our tounge to begin with, but the poor pony did not deserve it. It was being told off for nothing...basically it wasnt doing the right thing (even though it was being yanked and kicked at the same time). The lady/owner/girls mother was smacking it accross THE FACE, body, everywhere, and if it moved, it got another one accross the face. The pony was sweaty and distressed and was then preceeded to be entered ito the ridden m&m class. It was placed (cant remember where). A lady who was with us, who we came with, couldnt stay quiet when the beatings continued and said she was going to report it to one of the societies...........the reply was "I am on the society, so what are you going to do about it".............................................
Absolutely disgusting.
People like this shouldnt be allowed to own animals.
