ok, so when do people generally feel that the last date for a full clip should be in order that the summer coat is not affected?

Normally do final clip on mine 2nd Week in January, so that they are ready without lines for the end of March.
Hope it helps.

It does depend on the individual and their coat but we always try to keep it for HOYS and immediately afterwards clip out all except legs. This is the years that we are lucky enough to qualify ponies for these shows!!If the coat is slow to change in Spring then at least you only have lines round the tops of legs. Some hairier ponies got thei last clip like this in January. Lots of rugs and a snuggy hood always helps as well!!

I have a very beautiful but very hairy Dartmoor. We never seem t get our act together to show in the winteer but we do compete in a fair amount of dressage which he is showing real talent at (plus will help him in the ring) and he's just started to learn to jump. He's finding working terribly difficult because of the hairy coat - i was thinking of clipping him (hunter clip) as opposed to a bib - do you think that a full clip would be better for his coat for showing in March/April? We only had him in July so have no experience of how long his coat takes to come oout - but he did start to coat upthis year late Aug/early Sept. He's off to Georgie James next week for jumping training so we need to clip him asap.....what do you think?

I would definately give it a hunter clip, just leave the legs on, if you do a blanket or a bib etc, you always end up with a slightly two tone pony in the spring....

I agree, I would clip out everything other than legs and head. And then even if the coat is not fully grown through in spring it is much much less noticeable with no lines on the body.
My boy is going to get his first ever clip this weekend, and then will be wrapped up in snuggy hood and rambo rug and hoping he will have summer coat through by spring. Being a palamino they have v different colour summer and winter coats so would look very silly half and half !

I understand about legs but why not take the head off? Wouldnt he look a little daft if left on?
