My German shepherd came from the police and is very vocal when he is on the lead. He is the softest dog ever but wants to play and investigate every other dog he meets. This has resulted in me being dragged down slippy banks etc and he looks quite scary when he is barking because I won't let him go and have a look.
Off the lead he is fine and will run up to dogs and have a sniff if they are happy for him to do so, or if they growl etc he comes running back to me.
Is there anything I can do - I don't want people to think he is an aggressive dog as this couldn't be further from the truth.

Are there any training/socialisation classes in your area? Your dog warden should be able to point you in the right direction. If meeting other dogs becomes the norm eventually you'll be able to get him working with you and listening no matter what other dogs are around.

The reason a dog has so many friends is that he wags his tail instead of his Tongue.

I would suggest puppy socialising classes... he has to lear when he is on the lead, he cannot behave like this this.... its hard though as he was a police dog..

Get a halti for him, that way he won't be able to drag you around and you will be able to give him a sharp pull to get his attention on you not drag you as a passenger.

Why did he leave the police? How old is he? He needs to focus on you , what does he go mad for? A ball,a tuggy or food? Use whatever turns him on to your advantage. Find a good motivational trainer, not an old fashioned yank and crank! Good luck

Thanks for all the suggestions.
He is 2 years old and left the police because he was too soft. Just wanted attention and snuggling all the time.
He is already in a halti and an extendable lead.
Classes sound good.
He is excitable over everything which I think is his problem. he just wants to play and be boisterous and a boy!
I think the barking etc is frustration as he doesn't understand why he can't play with them.
He is fine with humans - not even bothered bar one man who walks past us regularly. He does bark etc at him aswell but no - one else.

If he has been a Police dog he probably comes from working lines and may be bored, he might enjoy tracking or searching for articles, hide his favorite toy in the garden and get him to find it. Let him see where you put it to start and then make it more and more difficult for him. Teach him tricks or go to agility , anything to use his brain. I have a 13month female, working GSD and she is very smart and focused but needs brain work as well as excercise, please do not let old fashioned trainers flatten his drive, you have to be more exciting than anything else,it is hard work but great fun. He must have trainability or the Police wouldnt have had any interest in him. Working dogs need to work. Good luck Alys
