I have just bought a mare and foal from beeston (saved them from going to the meat man), mare is very nervous yet foal is happy as larry to be stroked where ever.... Foal and mare in very good shape, foal has just turned 3 months old and is huge!
Have noticed that mare doesn't seem to be producing alot of milk for foal, foal will try and suckle yet doesn't seem to be getting much out of her and just walks away, foal abit lethargic but carrying on...
What can we do to either make sure foal is getting nutrients or mum produces more milk? Tips needed urgently, they are being wormed tomorrow too as they need it. Mare isn't eating her hard feed ( shes on stud mix) has a mouthful then wanders off and wont finish it.. Mare is getting a bit stressy too
Any tips would be very grateful!! thanks in advance x

Well, as you say both Mare and Foal in good shape and foal is huge Mare has obviously had a good milk supply, thus far If the mare has lived out and you have now got her stabled, it may be that she has not been used to stud nuts and is stressing as she wants to be at grass You can purchase foal creep pellets and introduce foal to them by feeding them from a basin. then a bucket as foal gets used to them. They have all the nutrients necessary and will make up for the Mares limited milk supply Best both out at grass with bucket feed supplimenting for mare if needed Good luck Babs www.SunrayAngloArabianStud.co.uj

Maybe check her teeth. She ild be struggling to eat hard feed.
Try a stud balancer which is easier to eat and fed in smaller quantities but will provide all she needs.
She may just be stressing as god knows what poor bugger been through!! Bless her.
Hey foal started on creep pellets to take pressure off mum.
I always find Dr green is the absolute best thing for mares with foals at foot

Babsr, Mare and foal are on grass 24/7 as mare you cant get near enough to touch her yet as she is very nervous, i know she has been used as a broodmare since she was able to and she is now 8. so when they came home they went in their own paddock.
Wish we could get teeth/vet checked but cant get near mum! will go and look for milk pellets for baba.... anything we can give mare for her to produce more milk? shes also not botherd where teh foal is or what shes doing...

To be honest if foal is 3 months and huge not much is going wrong!!!!! At three months mum wont really be overly bothered what baby is doing!!!!! Mare will be a little stresed with moving house however the foal sounds like it done really well, so I wouldnt worry too much!!! As long as they have access to good grass I wouldnt worry too much. If you can gradually introduce some sort of feed im sure over a few days the mare will get used to it and eat it well!!!!!!! If not im sure baby will xxxxxxxx

Feed her pure chocolate powder. We give it to our mares to help milk flow and it works but must be as high in Coco as you can find. But it sounds as though the foal just needs some creep feed or feed mother and foal will start eating that. But doctor green is the best.
Good luck

I was just wondering as from what you say that there isn't a real bond between the mare and her foal and with her hardly having any milk even though the foal looks as if he's been "done" well by his mum.Is this foal hers ? As she came from Beeston and obviously a caring owner wouldnt have sent a mare & foal there so im guessing she has come from a dealer, maybe the 2 have just been bunged in together but are not actually related!!! Dealers just dont care and they probably would have got more money for a mare with its baby than just a very nervous mare on her own. Just a thought.............

not a dealer they have come from... Me and sister went to look at where they had come from on monday and to be honest beeston was better than where they were... It was like something from a horror filem, think the rspca said they needed to get rid of some horses so about 6 of theres went through beeston.
Foal is now on 'creep pellets?' now, see if mare is in foal again she would naturally be weaning foal off herself wouldnt she ? x
