So its 5 weeks or so off 2007 - we are looking forward to the new season - but have the shows and people envolved learnt from their mistakes or will the judging be just as bad as ever ''Not what you know or do - but who you know''. I myself think websites like this are helping us and them to see the light and how obvious it is sometimes when we are being judged unfairly What are your thoughts

Mt little black book of bad judges I have collated over the years saved me a fortune this year. I only entered a third of the amount of shows as I usually do because this year seemed to be a year when they were out in force in my area! I hope they all judge somewhere else next year ;D

all i can say is that 80% is face judged 10% ride 10% conformation and every year the face judging gets worse soon you will see jockeys in classes without a pony and still win

all i can say is that 80% is face judged 10% ride 10% conformation and every year the face judging gets worse soon you will see jockeys in classes without a pony and still win I feel that i have to join in on this thread just simply to air my views.Me..well many yrs in the show ring and yes had bad days under certain judges and some fabulous ones to match. like many others on here got fed up with what i thought was strange judging and so thought well...i will do the done thing and become a so called judge myself.... So now after being on both sides of the fence for several yrs all i can say is that there are many many moaners/selfish competitors/whingers etc etc...whose whole showing life is sour grapes because 85% of the time a better pony/competitor has beaten them. I would like to think that i am more than fair and straight in my judging and yet still get verbal abuse/daggers drawn and so called slagged off by the odd few.. Well all you showing folk.....we do it for free/give up our time/do the training, exams etc......to do what i think is the right thing and still get blasted from time to time....thus making me think WHY BOTHER? ? every judge has their own eye...be it blind or not...we are not all bad...so come on give us a break or there will end up with NO ONE WILLING TO JUDGE

Hear Hear judge judy. Far to many competitors watch classes with their rose coloured spectacles on for their own and their friends animals and are then super critical of everyone else. Face judging or bent judging does happen but only occassionally.
A lot of decent good judges are begining to wonder if it is about time they took up another hobby. Unfortunately the ones that are a little suspect would be the ones who stayed and would end up judging more classes.
It is about time we showed judges a little more respect.and remember that without them there would be no showing.

I agree with showing respect to judges but when you know that judges have in the past - or will in the future (and I am speaking - I hope- about a minority of judges) put faces or their friends up then one does lose heart a bit. However, In defence of judges, we have had in 2006 some lovely judges- people who I do not know and have not been under before. They give me the heart to carry on. If all judges were bad there would be no competitiors! Except for masochists! I keep a book and write down comments on judges. There is no point in showing under someone who clearly does not like your type of pony - entry fees are too high for this silly idea!

"faces" won classes decades ago and they still will. I've seen some diabolical instances in the past of a "face" winning when they shouldnt have even been in the rosettes or allowed to remain in the ring - ponies napping, unseating their riders, leaving the ring only to return still in tears and be awared the top spot, blatant lameness, obviously hugely overheight and all still winning ....and I'm sure I'll see many more.
However these instances overall were infrequent and overall faces won because they deserved too so yes I agree on the sour grapes comment earlier.
A badly ridden and/or produced animal won't win, regardless of whether its absolutely top class or isnt. A superbly ridden and/or produced mediocre animal is often placed over its above mentioned top class rival.
The reason "faces" usually make the places is because their mounts are presented to their very best advantage, produced and ridden exceedingly well too with the animal themselves being of at least the required quality. If an animal isnt ready they dont show it till it is. They are expert in disguising any weaknesses which, judges being mere mortals, may then overlook.
If an animal is good enough, produced and ridden to its full advantage it will win classes regardless of the name or lack of attached to it. Many a time Ive seen top placed Wembley show horses and ponies (some professionally produced, some not) move on to new owners trying to buy success, only to find themselves languishing at the bottom of every line-up because they havent a clue how to produce or ride the thing properly.

Lala is right in holding a black book of bad judges, but I suggest going one step further.
From my over forty years of breeding and showing, I have seen judges prefer one type of my breeding stock from another, its not just bad judging, its allowing for the judges preferences that is important!
If you have more than one pony, try and take time out to not only list your thoughts on the judges, but also what was up infront of the judge and what (who?) did well, once you have one or two years of information, start correlating it, it makes interesting reading and gives an insight that judges have their own minds as well.
There are some judges that I would never show any pony infront of (I've even for a laugh and a bet taken a certain multi supreme pony from another stable infront of one judge and was placed last (the position this certain judge has always - until I stopped showing infront of him - put me). There are some judges that I know see me and respect my ponies, there are some that I have to be selective about which pony I show infront of them, there are some that prefer Stallions, some that prefer Mares. There are some that prefer other ponies, regardless of their behaviour.
Log it and use it to your advantage. Remember that when in the ring there are three fickle minds at work at least........Yours, your pony's and the judges!
Hope that helps and good luck everyone in 2007.

I predict 2 more black years of showing
HOYS M&M being almost totally contended by professionals, before they finaly sit up & realise they are cutting their noses to spiye their faces Decent Judges getting fed up & giving up The goverment fining us for not having Operators Licenses, Overweight lorries or penalised for gas guzzling 4 wheel vehicles
if we survive then it might improve but i doubt it

Come on everyone. Lets start 2007 on a postive note. Yeah 2006 had some dodgy judging but sites like this have made some people more accountable no longer is everyone thinking but no one saying ! IMO all competitors should get out there and do their thing because i personally dont do it just for the rosette or qualification but use it as a valid reason not to be at home doing the ironing or entertaining the in-laws ! Hurry up summer shows my sanity needs you !!!

yeah i agree come on guys if it is that bad seriously why the hell do you do it!! Honestly what is going to bring down showing is the constant moaning and bit*hing by all the competitiors. Don't get me wrong this year there has been many lows but also many highs and if you won all the time it would be boring anyway! Can all of you on here honestly tell me everytime you have won you have completely deserved it over everyone else in that class, I know i have had some lucky wins in my time! You take the good with the bad, count yourself lucky you even get the chance to do it, enjoy the social side of it and the pride you get when you do well or see improvement and in my opinion you learn how to graceful in defeat! I always said when the time comes that i dont smile when i win or can't congratulate the person next to me i will quit as the fun will have gone out of it and i will be a person I dont want to be. So come on 2007 I am bored of the lack of shows!!

Here here, bring on 2007. I for one can't wait to get my list of qualifiers through and start sending for schedules and planning who is going where. I always try to take the rough with the smooth and pay close attention to judges preferences whether it be type, manners or faces and then vote with my feet. Winter is sooooo boring for us Hack, Cob and RH people that it maybe does us good to have a break from shows. There don't seem to be so many disheartened people as within the M & M and pony fraternity who can show all year round.

That first warm show of the year when we get the chairs out of the lorry and sit round with our mates and have a glass of two of wine is what keeps me going in the winter. The winter quals where we huddle round a cup of hot chocolate are not so good! I've got what I think is a real good contender for next year - and if I am wrong the wine will still be nice!

We have seen some bad judging in 2006 but on the whole most of it was good.
As someone said earlier you should make notes. We have been under some judges and been last and then gone under them with a different animal and been first. We just take the right animal under the right judge. Sometimes we get it right and sometimes we get it wrong.
As long as the animal is turned out beautifully and goes well we are alway happy and am glad to put them back on my lorry even if they are last, and on the odd occasion rider or horse mucks up so what there is always another day.
There are judges that I will not go under and therefore save myself lots of money cause I am usually right. It has taken quite a while for us to learn the ropes, but learn them you must.
Good luck to everyone for 2007 and remember its only a show.
