Help - pony saddle slips forward when we school her on a circle. We've tried a pad, tighter girth & wider saddle to no avail. Advice anyone?

I had a small pony with the same problem, which made it impossible to ride her. A few things helped: -
- crupper as a short term fix - we borrowed a larger size cub saddle ( my daughter was 7 when we had this trouble, so a normal one was not going to be any use) whilst saddle below was being sorted out, and this did not move. - A fylde saddle was purchased and fitted, and we did not have any problems again. These saddles, seem to fit ponies so well. there are plenty of 2nd hand ones about, and if it does not solve the problem, it will be easy to sell again, and you should not loose any money. Peter wilkinson at fylde is vey helful, and will quickley alter the width and fit if necessary, for a modest amount,
I hope this helps, good luck

Well obviously get the saddler to check the fit and if another make would be better then change.
However, for some ponies this will always happen. I have a new forest mare who has a therwell shape. I swear she has IBS, front girth strap will always be one hole tighter than the second. Tried everything and the only thing that worked is the thorowgood cob non slip saddle cloth. Not too expensive, suggest ebay.

Try either a Professional Choice non-slip neoprene girth or a "zig-zag" anatomically shaped girth as used by some showjumpers which is shaped to sit more between the front legs with arches for the elbows to move. Also a point strap on the saddle. Along with a sticky pad really helped with my pony!

Either use a crupper or get a saddler put to check it and flock it up Hope this helps

Ask a saddler or get a thicker numnah or saddlepad (polypads are good) or use a crupper

I was once told to use a dampened chamois leather under the saddle to stop it moving

we have a very flat backed pony, we bought her a Fylde saddle (and at Peters suggestion), we also use a Gel eeze non slip pad under the numnah and a balding girth. The pads cut to your saddle so can,t be seen just wash in hot water and fairy liquid after each use and it will last years

Hi, I didnt have time to read the previous posts so apologies if this has already been mentioned.
Unfortunately the reason your saddle is moving is probably due to it not fitting correctly. I went through a long process of trying everything to stop my mares saddle slipping, trying all types of girths- elasticated and not, tonnes of numnahs and pads, materials under the saddle for grip, nothing worked. I had her a made-to-measure saddle, expensive- yes, but it flipping worked! Doesnt slip now! My mare had hardly any wither, and we had always had wide saddles on her, she actually needed a much narrower saddle! I wouild advise getting a couple of Qualified saddlers (registered with the Master Saddlers) and get some different opinions from them. Best of luck.

Often if the saddle is going forward it is too wide so a moraira says, they often need one narrower

For wide flat backed ponies the fylde hayden is a great saddle, sometimes certain types of saddles don't fit wide ponies.

Ask your saddler to fit an extra pointer strap to fasten the girth to ... our saddles often have four straps (see pic below) to anchor the saddle down at the front and back
