Had a very busy day at the Futurity at Arena today!!!!!! Ran up 7 horses for various people and ourselves including Arthur our orphan foal who had a lovely day!!!!
Pleased with most of the results, Colin (B Sea Swift x Casino Royale K) gained marks of 8.91 not quite an elite but close enough to make me totally thrilled!!!!!!
Our Don Ricoss x Juswith Sindoor gained a 1st Premium of 8.43 - not to be knocked!!!!!!
However our orphan foal Arthur was presented as of course if he didnt go with us there would be nobody to feed him at home!!!!! He is fit and healthy and ALIVE!!!!!!
The vet of course said "Is he an orphan when did you lose the mare?" and felt we had got the feeding right and he looked fabulous for his age and circumstances and we had basically to carry on as we had done!!!! I was thrilled!!!!!!
However we presented him to the evaluators who watched him as he had a fabulous time galloping, bucking, and creating around the arena. I totally appreciate he did not show his true paces and definately didnt do much trotting as he was entertaining himself creating at full tilt!!!!! This to me was fantastic that he was confident to go to a new place and gallop and have just great fun, having travelled and been put in a strange stable which we hired to make sure he was ok!!!!! His marks really did not matter!!!!!! I want a live foal who is confident and healthy!!!!
However when he was caught for the commentary on him, it was stated over the tannoy that it had been difficult circumstances and very hard for a foal to be presented without his mum as she was really POORLY!!!!!
At this point I was totally horrified that it was being announced to the public I had presented a foal away from a very sick mare as it made me look to be callous and uncaring and to be honest in my opinion it had been made into a Welfare Case.
I must stress in no circumstances would we present a foal that had been taken away from a sick mother. I wanted to post as I know many people from the forums have presented youngsters and if were watching Arthur this had not been the case!!!!
I had to say "The mare is dead" and it was then changed to "Err she has been very poorly she is no longer with us" This did not correct the fact of what had been said previously and stress the mistake that had been made and he was an orphan foal. I will also add he is 8 weeks old and the mare died when he was 4 HOURS old!!!!!
Im not a complaining person but wanted to make sure everyone was aware he is an Orphan not a Welfare case!!!!!!!!!
All in all a very good day of which we enjoyed and looking forward to next year without (god forbid) the same circumstances!!!! Thank you BEF for a fabulous two days!!!!!! (Alsager and Arena!!!!!!)

holiday that must of been awful, I would of been really upset as it would have sounded as you have said above, you had been uncaring and brought Arthur even though his dam was 'poorly'. Im glad you made them aware his mummy had actually died when he was just 4 hours old. Well done on your results as it sounded like you had a fab time x

Can't blame you being upset, how nice though that all the work, time, love and effort you have put into him has made him such a confident foal, some who have mums wouldn't be that confident. I only breed Dartmoors so don't understand the grading ect but can he go back next year?

Holiday.. that is awful what was said. I don't know you personally, but I have read what you post on this site and I have to say you are the most helpful person on here when it comes to anything to do with breeding. Arthur is a very lucky little boy to have you as his mum as you do, and always will do, the very best for him. I bet he had a blast showing off in public xxx

Oh, how inconsiderate, maybe you could understand if they weren't horsey people, but, come on, get your act together!! But, other than that, very well done! Arthur is doing you proud, would love to see him flying round the arena! :-)

Holiday - that was a horrible mistake for the commentators to make, I dont blame you either for being upset.
What has happened with Arthur and losing his mummy, over the last few months, has been an emotional time for you.......so to hear it MIS-REPORTED would be very upsetting.
When the press mis-reported/invented facts about my sons accident, I was distraught. People have said "what does it matter - you know the truth" - but it does matter very much.
Little details can paint false pictures in peoples minds, which are not correct.
I think I would write a very polite letter to the BEF, just explaining why you feel so upset?

Thank you for your kind words, I will take Arthur forward again in his "best" year either as a yearling 2 or 3 year old. He isnt topped off like a normal foal would be and looks weak through his topline, however under vet supervision they want him that way, so im really not bothered regarding his marks, he had to come with us so we could feed him so as he is fit and well it gave him some exercise whilst we were there lol!!!!! LP what you have been through, in comparision, ours has been a drop in the ocean and in real terms loosing Mona cannot compare, however yet again you come through with words spoken from your heart and sum it up so well. The truth should be stated at all times!!!! I have written to the BEF to suggest in future that the facts are stated. Anyway heres some snapshots of Arthur that were taken!!!!!

I must admit I'm guilty of having stomped across the ring to the commentator, who was walking inside the ring with a mike, to correct her when she announced my homebred animal as belonging to his rider instead of to me, his owner/breeder. In mitigation - they had already done exactly the same thing at a previous show, when I went and spoke to them privately later on, and it was corrected later on the PA but well afterwards, and I had come to the show via an emotional funeral and was even still wearing my black, no time to change and watch the class.
I do feel for you holiday, it's very different matter when the foal is orphaned at birth as Arthur was - and what a good job you've made of him - to showing the foal of an ill, or recently deceased, mare, they should have made the circumstances clear. As lovepink knows more than any of us, what is said about us in public DOES matter to us.

Arthur looks adorable Holiday, and you must be very very proud of what you have achieved with him....its no mean feat trying to bring up an orphan foal!!
I too would have been very upset with comments like this - why couldnt the commentator just describe the real situation??
Please could you come and sort out my mare and foal before Tuesday at Myerscough!!!!!!!!!

Fantastic piccies! Arthur looks like he is having a great time and he is certainly a credit to your hard work/dedication.
I would love to know how you convince your foals to keep still long enough to plait them up?

I would just like to say I have had a positive response from the evaluators and the BEF with a solution for next year so this will not happen again.
Many thanks to the BEF for acting and responding!!!

holiday, i have only just seen this thread and cannot believe how insensitive and hurtful the commentators were. had i been in your situation i would have been in tears and mad at how the comments might come across. it sounds like you were very brave and coped remarkably well with the situation.
Arther is gorgeous and a credit to you, your hard work and love for him really shows. im glad Arther had a fun time and your other foals look lovely too.

Oh what stupid people! I would have been really cross too. In this circumstances you are particularly proud and particularly sensitive and protective. I do hope you feel a little better now. Besides his mum was there, your his mum are you not?
