we have a very well known show pony stud (they also breed welshies and hacks) not that far from us. i have always admired thier heavenly ponies i would love to go and visit and drool at thier beautifull equines but am not and may well never be in a position to purchase one of thier ponies. do you think it would be cheeky to visit. breeders out ther would you welcome somebody to just 'have a look' or would it feel you were wasting your time???

Personally I like to show people around our stud and talk about our youngstock and breeding programmes, however if it is a busy time ie showing, stud work, etc it is not always easy to fit people in. My view is if someone comes they may just mention it to someone else who may buy or use the stallions so no one is turned away!!!! Just ring and ask them they can only say no!!!!!!

I'd see if they have a website as that might indicate whether they welcome visitors in general rather than specifically buyers. And I'd email them if possible so they have time to consider - getting people by phone can be hard and it also bounces them into a snap decision and if they are just back from doing something hard (physically or emotionally) then you might get a different answer than one they've left until they are in the right frame of mind to reply.. Just speaking personally as I do show folk around whether they're buying or not right now, but I don't like phone calls at the wrong moment and when you have a stud there are plenty of those times when a phone ringing is just the wrong thing to happen

most studs are very happy to show people round whether they are buying or just admiring, give them a ring or send an e mail, i love going to our local studs to see the seasons crop of foals, always made welcome..
