Fed up of them calling ....from india...pakistan or never never land, conducting surveys, trying to sell you a mobile phone package, electric or gas supply... I am becoming increasingly rude to the people that phone....even though I know they are only trying to make a living.. It makes me wonder what the point of being x directory is

Lolly are you with BT? There is a service, don't know what it's called, where you can block certain numbers from calling you, they give you a pin number and when you get a cold call, you put your pin no. in and that number can't call you again. We used it when we had a lot of dropped calls, apparently its when a computer dials you but there isn't an operator spare to speak to you. Also, there's the telphone preference service www.mpsonline.org.uk/tps/ which it's against the law for companies to cold call you if you are registered with TPS. Edited to add - the BT service is called Choose to Refuse, you have to pay a fee for it, but the TPS is free.

www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps The above website will let you register your no online and its also worth rining the no below for Silent Calls If you have been troubled by calls where the phone rings but on answering there is no one there, you may wish to register your number on the Silent Callgard Service on 0870 4443969. These calls are generated by automatic dialling equipment which dial more numbers than there are operators available to take the calls. Both are free and calls normally stop within a month and if anyone rings you after that you tell them your going to report them!!!

we had problems a while ago with abusive calls from an ex friend of my daughter - BT were really good and let has have the choose to refuse option on a free trial for a few weeks, by which time the calls stopped. The telephone preference service is ok for some companies, but local ones may not be aware of it and will still call - good luck with sorting it out!

I had a very friendly sounding lady from India or Pakistan ring me last year trying to sell me broadband. It certainly sounded good (although I did have an awful job to understand her) and the whole package could include Sky, mobile, phone etc. She must have been talking me into it for about 45 minutes and I had nearly agreed to change when I asked if I would have to change my e-mail address. When the answer was 'yes' I gave her a polite rollicking and hung up.
How many of us, with businesses and commitments through the web and e-mail are in the position to change our e-mail address, I ask you??? For a start I'd have to have all new business cards and stationery reprinted. It doesn't bear (sp?) thinking about!!

I have many phone calls from cold callers from all over the world i.e India with names like John!! Telling me I've won a free phone or holiday. I find the best reponse is to say...God I'm so pleased, I'm having a real bad day..lost my job, all my credit cards cancelled and my house is being repossessed you'd be amazed at how quick they hang up. One that always used to get double glazing sellers was quite simple "I love wood" they could never argue that one, obviously not in their hard sell handbooks.

With the free holiday ones, don't press any keys on your phone. It asks you to press 9 or whatever, but it's a scam, it connects you to a premium rate number that costs something silly like £9.50 per minute.

The best way to deal with the conservatory/ greenhouse types is to tell them that you live on the top floor of a block of flats!

One thing I have tried, but I don't know whether it works is to just lay the phone down without switching it off, tho' after a while it makes a loud whistling noise! I believe that the caller cannot make other calls until he is disconnected from your line. Try it!!!
Trouble is, it's nearly always when I need to use the phone or am expecting a call.

whenever we get a phonecall for improving our home they always ask " what improvement would you like to make "oh replies " i would like a swimming pool" the reply is always " sorry we dont do those only conservatories, doors and windows" to which oh replies " oh well you cant help me then " the phone usually then goes dead !
