should you clip the saddle out? i've been informed that if it isn't then you could get put down the line, is this true? surely the horses back is better for it being left?.

Hi i always clip our fully out except the legs and half the head, if you always used a think knumnah and and show 1 in the ring, i personnally dont think you need it left on if you replace it with a pad - i and do think it makes a difference in the ring to the overall picture

I recently bought rechargable clippers. HEINIGER. More expensive than plug-ins especially as you need a spare battery (£60) as it lasts an hour clipping time and the same to re-charge. Much cheaper from a farming store on the web than any equestrian ones. To start off with I followed the instructions on blade tightening and they were useless. Tightened them up and now I love them. Clip great and so much easier for anything difficult instead of having trailing leads. Also they don't seem to get hot.

manicblonde where do i start! Make sure you have newly sharpened blades and your pony is VERY clean this will stop tram lines. Also use correct blades, i use coarse on my sec A (he is already starting to resemble a whooly mammoth) medium on my small riding horse and fine on my thoroughbred hack (she has vertually NO winter coat ) Take your time, don`t rush it and let the clippers glide through in long sweeps, don`t force through the hair and and keep blades well oiled as you go, if blades get hot stop and let them cool down. Has your pony been clipped before? Are you doing a full clip?

if your pony is dark and you are not clipping fully have chalk ready for putting guide lines on ! Also would advise wearing a mask and some old / paper overalls and an old hat to cover up neverything .....as the hair gets in places you would not know you had !!!!

Right, the pony is Grey, She's a WPBR and already looks like a cotton wool ball on legs despite being rugged! I have sharpened my blades and got everything ready. Whats the best area to start the clip, I need to do her legs as well so any tips?

manicblonde, I use pink or blue chalk on grey`s, borrowed it from the kids! I usually start of at the shoulder, if it`s first time doing a particular horse/ pony i will let the clippers run then put palm of hand on neck/shoulder with clippers resting on top to get them used to vibration and noise. Legs It would be easier if i could show you!lol front legs i tend to stretch forward and do a clean run right up the middle to the top of the leg. Then put leg down and clip straight up the back without pausing again. Hope this makes sense!

Thanks Spot, I get what you mean about the front and back of the legs. What about the sides? I did do a bib clip on her last year and she was very well behaved. JUst worried that I am going to leave tramlines everywhere!
We are showing Sunday so I'll have a go Monday when she is clean.
If you live in Wales let me know and I'll pay you!!LOL!!

Good idea to clip on Monday. Sides are a little more fiddly as you have to carefully get into the contours, i am sure you will be fine manicblonde. The more you do it the easier it gets .I am visiting wales at the weekend!lol going to see my Arab mare and her first foal at stud! It`s a 4hr drive
