Following overbents comments on the showing from stable or field. We have just got a new pony who is a white grey and shows every mark. some hints and tips would be great it just seems a mud, dust and grass stain magnet.
What do others use in the way of shampoo's rugs routine etc.

I had a grey some years ago. Found that she stayed cleaner turned out than kept in (although she would take great pleasure in rolling in the dustiest patch she could find). Found that Lincoln Horse Shampoo was best for getting the stains off, also the Vanish bar soap for stubborn marks! Other than that, just covered as much as possible with rugs/bandages, and travel prepared incase you have to sponge off any marks gained in the trailer/lorry!

The grey pony survival kit:
Rugs/hoods - as many as you can lay your hands on. Amigo bug rugs are fab. They seem to keep most dirt off but do need washing often (but tumble dry in 10 minutes). Use lycra hoods under the bug rug with another rug on top (depending on temperature) the night before a show. This should drastically reduce the chance of stains!
Cowboy Magic Stain remover - Buy 3. Keep 1 for home and 1 for the lorry and have 1 in your ringside basket. Follow the instructions. Its brilliant.
Touch of silver shampoo (the type old ladies use) - This keeps light tails a lovely silvery shade...instead of a yellowy colour. Use at least twice a week in the showing season. Plenty of de tangler will repel the dirt. Also good on pony's body.
Show sheen - This will not really make your grey shine BUT really helps repel dirt. Don't use under saddle area as this will also repel your jockey!
Hope this helps!!

Supreme do a blue powder to add to rinse water that has the same effect as the old Dolly Bluebags. The other tip is to keep the stable bed as clean as possible. Stay up all night prior to a show and remove any poo as it hits the ground. Train pony to pee in a bucket too!!!
Joking apart, travel bandages and hock boots are better than travel boots as greys seem to be able to poo down their travel boots (funny how bays with black legs can't do this?). As ours is not a native I don't plait his tail (wouldn't want "waves") so I travel with 2 tail bandages: 1 in the conventional way (to base of dock) and the other from half way down the dock to within a couple of inches from the end of the tail.

I'll bet that Supreme powder costs a packet - long after the dolly blue days - or when we had'nt got any, used to put blue ink out of the quink bottle in the rinse, but not the permanent ink, the washout stuff. Dont have greys now, thank goodness, but use the 'touch of silver' on white socks.

I have a blue and white traditional more white than blue! i find that if you mix dolly blue ( the one for horses ) and diamond white shampoo together with hot water it works great, also if you have a yellow stain that wont come white put some neat diamond white to the stained bit and leave for 10mins or so, it can get the diriest of stains off. then hood, rugs, travel boots with bandages over the top, and a tail bag on. And your horse will stand out like a sore thumb.

To keep clean after bathing put tail into a leg of pair tights.. Then put tail bandage on in usual way. Works wonders.
For stubborn tails stains. Wash with the purple colour 'white n bright' leave in -plait tail- wash out in morning. Or put lemon juice on tail.

This is a great help - keep all the ideas coming. I went to turn him out this morning and he had a complete flat pile of poo stuck to his neck - methinks rugs with hood from now on.

I have two greys one a novice Connie and he is the ultimare bog pony as likes to use poo as a pillow for his head in the stable I have found lemon fairy liquid good and also use white vinegar in a bucket of hot water on stubborn stains they have come off after being washed in the vinegar over a period af a few days . Like Ferret my connie still has black legs trying not to think about when they lighten as the stains on head , ears and neck are bad enough at the mo. We have ordered him a hood with ears. We use shavings and the night before a show I do a late skip out before bed ...but got a feeling my irish friend will still find some to rest his head on! Also use the cowboy magic yellow out stuff and agree that supreme sparkle is brilliant on manes and tails . Word of warning do not use cheap summer sheets like the one we had on our connie from a rather well known store...the dye came off onto his coat and he turned bay over night ...took me ages to get off too!!!!

Personally rather than constantly bathing and plaiting manes and tails all season, I would let the pony relax and then just clean when needed.
I used to have a coloured and am constantly dealing with white legs - and have never found any problem getting them white again however muddy or stained with a good bath. For grubby white legs I use old fashioned soap powder (without bleach!) that you can cake on and then scrub with a dandy brush. It works wonders !
Another couple of hints ... - Snuggy Hoods - turnout hoods and rugs (with belly band and tail flap) are great for keeping ponies clean out or in. They are much thicker than standard lycra hoods and although pricey are really worth it. - Sparkle spray - dont use baby oil on white mane/tail as it can leave it yellowy, but use sparkle spray instead (cant remember brand - white with purple writing)

Agree about Orvis which comes in large pots and also the shine and glow from Christies Direct in Ireland. One word of warning do not put Orvis onto a cut or open wound it plays havic with it. Cowboy Magic onto the tail once clean looks good.

Vanish soap is fab! I use it on my greys tail and on stubborn leg marks. Might try the Cowboy Magic yellow stuff as they are the bane of my life at the moment.. Baby wipes are great for last minute projectile poo-ing...

I found also that by turning out the night before they stay much cleaner. We have a small paddock next to the barn and chuck them out hooded, rugged and tails plaited. Being a RH I take the plaits out in the morning and use 2 bandages on the tail AND put in a tail bag. I agree with the poo down the legs, so I bandage the legs and put back travelling boots on as well. Somehow we seem to still turn up with some small area of dirtiness! Grr!

Have to say that, spray on vanish for clothes diluted gets rid of most stable stains. Haven't had a grey for ages but my sisters traditional coloured was the most mucky creature I have ever met and this worked. Also needed at least 2 baths before a show, and chalked all over after wash.

My boy uses poo as a pillow too ...ears etc are filthy every day !! Would recommend bale of straw over shavings ...the poo sinks into it and the end result in the morning is much better !!! Luckily my other conni is very dark steel grey ...a much better colour Do we know each other MaryMary ? Have you shown yours this year ?
