Hi Guys
Need a bit of advice. My mare has become very footsore and sometimes doesnt even want to come out of the stable. She is 5 months in foal and looks amazing. She is slighly lame due to a previous tendon injury. Do you reccommend i put frount shoes on her ? She hasnt the best feet in the world ie - Very sensitive even when trimming. I alwasy thought shoes was a big no no when mares have foaled and i dont really want to have them on and take them off when ready for foaling.
Thanks

I personally would try to avoid shoes if possible as if you take them off just before foaling she will be incredibly foot sore. I would if possible let her feet grow a little longer and not trim her back quite as hard. Im sure she will harden up if you try and avoid stoney ground and over winter when the ground is much softer she might suprise you and be ok!!!!! She will probably when due to foal find the extra weight on her legs will make her footie but once she has foaled a few days she will improve again!!!!!!

Thanks Holiday. I personally have never bred from a mare who is lame or footy as all mine have returned to work within 7/8 months. I suppose its a advantage or mares that you can breed when a slight injury occurs.

I'm assuming its not just the tendon lameness, but she's actually footsore too?
What's her diet like? A lot of the feeds for breeding stock are sky high with sugar and starch and a recipe for low-grade lammi, plus there's been a surge in grass and lots of footiness about just now.
Do you know how to check the digital pulse?
She'll probably get worse as she carries more weight so well worth getting to the bottom of now.

What about a big bed and some duck tape with padding? not ideal but may prevent the feet getting shorter and softer until they can grow a bit more.
